I graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and a minor in Spanish. I truly enjoy opening the doors of language and theatre to others; each tutoring charge I've had so far has been a learning experience for me as well. I believe that once there is a foundation of trust and a desire to learn established in the student, any subject can become easier to master. I focus just as much on how the person feels about the subject at hand as I do on the subject itself.
Please read further to see a few details concerning the subjects with which I work.
Spanish: I can bring in outside materials or I can work solely with the textbooks given me by the student. Either way, my goal is to discover the way that the student learns best, then present the work at hand accordingly, so that it doesn't take as much effort to understand it. While most classrooms focus on rote memorization, I will do all I can to create a natural learning environment where vocabulary is learned due to a need for actual communication. This often involves a bit of playacting, which, as a formally trained actor, I am well qualified to adapt (according to the age of the student) and facilitate.
English: I am currently working to ensure that my methodology falls in line with the Common Core Standards for Maryland and the District of Columbia (Virginia has not yet accepted Common Core). In order to make sure that your student is getting what she or he needs to succeed in her or his classroom, I will need to know the grade level she or he is as well as any specific trouble areas the teacher has noted. Grammar, spelling, writing and reading are all wrapped up in this one subject area; I do not tend to work on one area without addressing the others.
Theatre (acting): Depending on the student and the work necessary, I can focus on either improvisation or scripted work. I rely on character history building as well as simple text analysis to bring out the intention of the text, but actually giving life to the character requires absolute memorization and active choices. I was trained in suzuki, a physical methodology, as well as the "magic if" of Stanislavski. While I do work with some personal sourcing, I neither support nor work with Method acting, which is absolutely not what Stanislavski himself ever taught (Method acting was taught by Lee Strasberg).
