Split your 17 into 10 and 7.

 

Take the 9 away from the 10, which leaves 1 remaining:

 

10 - 9 = 1

 

Add that remaining 1 to the 7, and you get 8:

 

1 + 7 = 8

 

17 - 9 = 8
