You'll use the "take from 10" strategy.
Split your 17 into 10 and 7.
Take the 9 away from the 10, which leaves 1 remaining:
10 - 9 = 1
Add that remaining 1 to the 7, and you get 8:
1 + 7 = 8
17 - 9 = 8

If I understand this strategy, we will start adding to or subtracting from the number 10.
She started with (10 + 7) oranges.
She gave away (10 - 1) oranges.
Subtract (10 - 1) from (10 + 7).
She has (10 + 7) - (10 - 1) oranges left.
