Paul Morphy. Unfortunately, he predated the "official" World Championship matches which began in 1886. Thus, many sources (including Trivial Pursuit) will claim that Bobby Fischer was the first American World Champion since he held the title officially. Morphy was the American Champion from 1857 to 1871 and was considered the best player in the world during his time, with lots of matches to back it up.
