Hi Liz--
3 and 4/12 as an improper fraction would basically be a big pile of 12ths.
So, first look at the whole number 3. Each whole is 12/12, and since there are 3 wholes, together they would give you 36/12.
Add to that the remaining 4/12, and you get 40/12 as your improper fraction.
