I need help with this dosage by weight question.

Question

Diuril (chlorothiazide) 20 mg/kg/day in two divided doses has ben prescribed for a child who weighs 34 kilograms. The label reads 250 mg/5 mL. How many milliliter will you administer for each dose?

 

 

The answer i got was 6.8, I multiplied 20 mg and 34 kg then I divided it by 2, then I divided the total by 250 mg and then multiplied 5 mL. Please let me know if I did it right, and if not, can you show me the steps in how to get the answer because I have other questions similar to this. Thank you.

At 34 Kg the child should get 34(20) or 680 mg per day, or 340 mg per dose.

 

I use a proportion.

 

5 mL / 250 mg = x mL / 340 mg

1700 mL / 250 = x mL

6.8 mL = x
