There are differences between statutory law and common law. For example, Title 23, Ch. 13 of Pennsylvania's consolidated statutes contains the requirements for obtaining a marriage license in the state of Pennsylvania, whereas New York or California may have slightly different requirements. Common law is the law that has developed over time through custom, judicial precedents, and the interaction between the two. Common law also varies by state. A common law marriage is a marriage recognized under the law of a certain jurisdiction due to the conduct of the two individuals over a specific amount of time.
