Absolute value is very simply the distance from zero. Distance is always a positive number (or zero). Mathematically, you would simply ignore the sign, + or -.
The absolute value of negative 6 is 6 units greater than 0 (to the right on a number line) and negative one is one unit less than (to the left) of 0.
the absolute value of -6 is larger than -1. ignoring the signs, 6 > -1 or algebraically: |-6| > -1
