Aeneas was pious because of the way he persisted in carrying out his duty for his family, his gods, and his people. He carried his grandfather on his shoulders and statues representing his ancestral gods while his city burned down, determining upon a quest to found a new home. Granted, he needed to be reminded of his goal multiple times, but his understanding that he had to do this to save his people is what makes him pious.
