The Hebrew language is very condensed. It relies on Prefixes and Suffixes rather than use additional words. Therefore, it is based on ROOT LETTERS that are adapted as needed.
The root letters of נָפָל (fell masculine singular), are נ,פ,ל.
another example from the book of Genesis is נְפִלִים = The Fallen Ones that were present before the flood.
