A tort is any action in which a civil wrong is committed besides a breach of contract and the law allows for the injured party to seek monetary damages. There are seven basic torts: assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, trespass to land, trespass to chattels and conversion. Contracts and contract law focuses on both verbal and written agreements, their performance, formation and the breaches of them. Primarily disputes in contract law deal with three main issues; offer, acceptance, and consideration. Criminal law is the study of criminal offenses and defenses where litigation is often pursued and jail or community service time is often at a possibility.
