A stone is dropped from the top of a cliff. It hits the ground below after 8.39s. How high is the cliff in meters?

Ignoring air resistance:

 

h(t) = (1/2)gt²

• h(t) = distance stone has dropped
• g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s²
• t = time since stone was dropped (in seconds) = 8.39 sec

 

h(t) = (1/2)gt²

h(t) = (1/2)(9.8)(8.39)²
