A certain number when multiplied by 5 and then added to 7 gives 42. What is that number?

Call the number x

 

multiplied by 5:  5x

added to 7:  5x + 7

gives 42:  5x + 7 = 42

 

5x + 7 = 42

5x = 35

x = 7
