What properties of neutrinos make them especially difficult to study?

They are extremely difficult to detect.  Neutrinos are extremely small, extremely light, and travel very fast.  They can be captured in certain nuclear reactions, but even with an intense source of neutrinos, you can only capture a tiny number of them.
