L = w+8

 

w(w+8) = 84

w² + 8w = 84

w² + 8w - 84 = 0

This can be factored.  The factors of -84 that add to 8 are (14)(-6)

(w+14)(w-6) = 0

 

w = -14 or w=6

Since width will be positive, the width is 6 yards

Length = w+8 = 14 yards
