how do you change fractions that can't go into 100 into a decimal?

i have a summer math packet and i don't get some of the questions

to change a proper fraction into a decimal, simply divide the numerator by the denominator using a calculator if needed.

You may have to use decimal representations with recurring numbers in it.  For example, you write 1/3 as 0.33333333.... (recurring), or 5/7 as 0.7 142857 142857  142857 ......... (the set of numbers 142857 keeps on repeating).

 

 

On the other hand 1 / 8 can be written as 0.125.  The reason; Even  though 8 does not go into 100, it goes into 1000!
