the ratio of rest time:working time in a factory of 8 working hrs was 1:3. In order to increase production, the workers and management agreed to change the ratio to 1:7. How many hours more per week will workers have to work?

Assuming a 40 hour week, the 1:3 ratio gives

 

[3/(1 + 3)](40) = 30 hours of work,

 

and the 1:7 ratio gives

 

[7/(1 + 7)](40) = 35 hours of work.

 

So the increase is 5 hours per week.
