Hi Maria from Tucson, AZ...hope you have a great week at school.
Alright, a fraction division problem, EVERY student's favorite! NOT!!
Okay, I'll help you with getting started. I won't give you the answer, however help you understand what you need to do to answer these questions. In doing so, you will be a pro at answering them.
So, you have 2 fractions: You know that they have specific labels, right?
8 4/5 and 2 3/4 are mixed fractions, so first, you will need to change the mixed fractions into improper fractions. You need to make sure you know what each of these kind of fractions are to begin to solve these.
Do you know how to change a mixed fraction into an improper fraction as well as the reverse, change an improper fraction into a mixed fraction. I am going to give you and example. I won't answer you problem but show you how to solve them. Keep practicing and you will be a pro. Here is my problem: 5 2/5 divided by 3 1/3
First step: Change 5 2/5 to an improper fraction
Take the whole number 5 and multiply it times the denominator 5 and add the numerator 2, keeping the 5 denominator as part of the fraction.
It will look like this: (5 x 5) + 2 = 25 + 2 = 27, so we have 27/5 as our improper fraction. This says 27/5 is the same as 5 2/5 RIGHT? Make sure you understand.
Do the same with: 3 1/3 (3 x 3) + 1 = 9 + 1 = 10 so we'll have 10/3
Now let's combine the 2 fractions into our division problem:
27 ÷ 10 =
5 3
So now what happens next? Do you know how to divide fractions?
Do you remember KCF or Invert divisor then multiply? You should!
This is how you divide fractions.
27 ÷ 10 = Keep the first fraction
5 3 Change division sign to multiplication
5 3 Change division sign to multiplication
27 x 10 = Next invert or flip the second
5 3 fraction
5 3 fraction
27 x 3 = Now complete the multiplication
5 10 numerator to numerator and
5 10 numerator to numerator and
denominator to denominator
81 Change this improper fraction into
50 a mixed fraction which is
1 31/51 which is the quotient or answer to my
example 5 2/5 ÷ 3 1/3
Now you have the tools to answer your problem.
