12qt. of a 24% sugar solution was mixed with 6qt. of pure water. What is the concentration of mixture?

How much sugar comes from each contributor?

From 12 qt, 24% is sugar, i.e. 2.88 qt (multiplying 12 qt by 0.24)

From 6 qt, no sugar.

So now you have 12+6 = 18 qts, with 2.88 qt of sugar; 2.88 divided by 18 is 4/25 which is 16% sugar.
