10 + 12y = 2y + 40 It is best to keep the larger, positive variable on one side, which would be 12y. To remove the variable from the other side, you would need to subtract 2y from each side. This will isolate the variable on one side of the equation.

10 + 10y = 40 Now you need to get the 10y by itself on the left side of the equation. To do this you would do the same as you did in the previous step and subtract 10 from each side.
