Ok, we have a semicircle that had a diameter of 4 yards, the length of the rectangle.
The width of the rectangle is 2 yards, the radius of the semicircle.
The formula for the area of a circle is A = πr2
The formula for the area of a semicircle is 1/2A = (1/2)πr2
(1/2)(3.14)(22) = 6.28 sq yards
By the way, the area of the rectangle would be (4x2) = 8 sq yards.
And the area of the rectangle, not shaded is the difference between the area of the rectangle and the area of the semi-circle.
8 - 6.28 = 1.72 sq yards.
