If I am reading the problem correctly, you need to square both the 2 and the x, which gives you:
4x^2 = 24, then you would divide both sides by 4.
You get x^2 = 6. Take the square root of both sides and you get: x = sqrt(6)
If the parenthesis are there for purposes of the squared function then you would get the following:
x = 2sqrt(3)
