The width of a rectangle is 7 inches less than its length. The area of the rectangle is 120 square inches. Solve for the dimensions of the rectangle.

I don't know how to put the equation together.

Vivian L.

width=(length)-(7 inches)
W=L-7
area=(width)(length)
120=WL
120=(L-7)(L)
120=L2-7L
0=L2-7L-120
0=(L...)(L...)
We need two numbers that when added together result in -7, and when multiplied result in 120.  Both numbers must be negative.
0=(L-15)(L-8)
Either or both parenthetical equations must equal zero.
0=L-15....L=15
W=15-7....W=8
120=LW

0=L-8....L=8
W=8-7...W=1
120 does NOT equal LW
