Math word problem - multiples

Question

Her father gave her $5 allowance for this week. If she triplex her money and add $5 that her dad gave , she would have $ 14. How much money does she have

It sounds like you are saying that she triples the money she already

had prior to her dad giving her the $5.  To that she added the $5 for

a total sum of $14.  Let's call the money she already had M

 

3M + 5 = 14   Just solve for M

3M = 9

M = $3

 

She had $3 before her dad have her the $5 allowance.

Check:  3(3) + 5 = 14

            9 + 5 = 14

            14 = 14
