Suzanne is going to rent a car while she is out of town one car rental offers a flat rate of $35 per day plus $0.10 per mile another car rental company offers the same car for $25 per day plus $0.25 per mile she will need the car for 5 days how many miles would she need to drive for the first rental company to be the better deal

Cost of first company for 5 days = 0.10x + 5(35) = 0.10x + 175

 

Cost of second company for 5 days = 0.25x + 5(25) = 0.25x + 125

 

The first company is the better deal if 0.10x + 175 < 0.25x + 125

 

                                                              -0.15x < -50

 

                                                                     x > 333 1/3

 

If Suzanne is planning to drive more than 333 1/3 miles during the 5 days, then the first company would be the better deal.

In order for the first company to have the better deal, its cost must be less than the cost of the second company.

 

0.10x + 35 < 0.25x + 25

 

 

Since she needs the car for 5 days, the total cost is 5 times as one day.

 

5(0.10x + 35) < 5(0.25x + 25)

 

 

Solve the inequality.

 

0.50x + 175 < 1.25x + 125

 

 

Subtract 0.50x on both sides of inequality.

 

175 < 0.75x + 125

 

 

Subtract 125 on both sides of the inequality.

 

50 < 0.75x

 

 

Divide both sides of the inequality by 0.75

 

66 2/3 < x

 

 

x > 66 2/3

 

 

Suzanne would need to drive more than 66 2/3 miles in order for company one to be the better deal.
