I offer tutoring across the range of biomedical science. I focus on college-level students and beyond, including those in biomedical professional programs (medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, etc.) and graduate school. I can also provide proofreading / editing services for your biomedical thesis or dissertation.

Biology - especially related to human health - is my passion and my area of expertise. I was a full-time university professor for 13 years, teaching general biology, human anatomy and physiology, genetics, cell biology, mammalian physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, and biochemistry at various undergraduate levels. More recently, I was the Chief Science Officer of a medical device company focused on the microbiome. Now, I am a medical writer focused on clinical study development. I love working with students pursuing healthcare as a career, but also enjoy working with those who aren't science majors. My PhD in Integrated Biomedical Science and 25 years of work in research in various capacities has given me the ability to understand and explain science in a way that helps students really grasp and retain the information they are learning.

I am a friendly and highly trained teacher and scientist, and I am committed to those I teach and tutor. Take advantage of my expertise and teaching experience to help you succeed in any area of biology. I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved Subjects

Anatomy

Anatomy

As a former professor with a PhD in Biomedical Science from the department of Physiology & Pharmacology (OHSU), I have over 20 years of experience working in science. I taught various levels of anatomy and physiology - from 100-level for general education to 400-level advanced mammalian physiology for biology majors - for 13 years. I can help you not only understand the material, but how your professor thinks about assignments and exams.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

As a former professor with a PhD in Biomedical Science from the department of Physiology & Pharmacology (OHSU), I have over 20 years of experience working in science. I taught a one-semester biochemistry for pre-meds, plus small biochem units in lower division courses like General Biology and Anatomy & Physiology. I have helped students prepare for the biochem portion of the MCAT. I can help you not only understand the material, but how your professor thinks about assignments and exams.
Biology

Biology

I was a university biology professor for 13 years. I have taught General Biology as well as a variety of upper division courses in Biology. I have tutored high school students preparing for AP and IB exams, college students preparing for exams, and adults wanting to gain additional education for their own interests.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I can help with various types of college and career counseling. As a volunteer with a program called Minds Matter, I helped high school students prepare for their college applications. As a college professor, part of my work involved advising students. This involved helping students to identify what major they need to take, given their life and career goals. I have helped both traditional freshmen and transfers, and have identified many mistakes commonly made by students - so I can help you avoid making the same ones! I enjoy guiding juniors and seniors in high school in selecting what college might be right for them. I have also helped college students and graduates prepare their applications for post-graduate study, including MD/DO, DPT, DDS, nursing, veterinary, optometry, pharmacy, and other programs.
Genetics

Genetics

My Ph.D. in Integrative Biomedical Sciences gave me training in many fields of biology, including genetics. My research involves how the prenatal environment affects gene expression. I have taught a 200-level Genetics course at a 4-year liberal arts college. This course includes both Mendelian and molecular genetics, so I am able to tutor practically any topic in the field of genetics for undergrads.
HESI (Nursing exam)

HESI (Nursing exam)

I have taught across the pre-nursing curriculum as a biology professor, including Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and more. I have taught Pathophysiology for nurses in the classroom, and tutored it for nursing students and medical students. I have tutored dozens of nursing students from the LPN/VPN level through the Advanced Practice/DNP level.
MCAT

MCAT

As a former professor with a PhD in Biomedical Science from the department of Physiology & Pharmacology (OHSU), I have over 20 years of experience working in science. I taught most of the pre-med biology curriculum, including molecular biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, cell biology, and biochemistry. I am able to tutor for the Biology portion of the MCAT and assist with the Biochem/Organic Chem portion.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

I trained in a biomedical science graduate program which focused heavily on neurophysiology. Since then, I have taught and tutored anatomy and physiology of neurons, neural tissue and pathways, the central nervous system, and the autonomic nervous system for about 15 years. I have taught all undergraduate levels, and tutored up through the doctoral level, including medical students and graduate students.
Nutrition

Nutrition

I have a Ph.D. in Integrated Biomedical Sciences. My dissertation involved how mothers' nutrition affects her babies' growth and metabolism, and continued that work for over a decade. In addition to my research, I have been interested in nutrition for over 20 years. I am qualified to tutor a general nutrition course for undergrads, but not courses for students becoming registered dietitians.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

My PhD in Integrated Biomedical Sciences out of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Oregon Health & Science University included coursework in molecular pharmacology. This included education on pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. I have also taught and tutored undergraduate biochemistry for several years. My 20+-year background in biomedical science has given me a strong understanding of many of the commonly prescribed drugs.
Physiology

Physiology

I have taught Anatomy and Physiology at every undergraduate level - Essentials for non-science majors, A&P for pre-nursing and pre-meds, Advanced Physiology for biology majors, and pathophysiology for nursing majors. I am a biomedical scientist - a molecular physiologist - working in women's health, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension. I have a knack for making complex topics understandable. And as a former professor, I can give you insight into how your instructor thinks about exams and assignments.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a former college professor teaching biology courses, I am able to proofread any undergraduate, graduate, or professional writing for biomedical purposes. I have a keen eye for spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and can make suggestions for rephrasing or light editing. I will not revise/rewrite papers for a student, but will do heavier editing for scientific journal articles and other professional writing by request.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

To complete my PhD, I wrote a dissertation (thesis) in biomedical science; I am comfortable helping students write a thesis in any area within this discipline. As a biology professor, I mentored undergraduate students on performing research for and writing their honors theses. I have worked with masters and doctoral level students in the biomedical sciences on thesis and dissertation writing. I have published several peer-reviewed published manuscripts based off of my dissertation and later research.

Very accessible, very thorough, personable

Elizabeth is a very knowledgeable and educated tutor who has helped my high school freshman feel more confident and accomplished in her studies.....Her grades have averaged 85%, 93%, 89% on her biology exams and currently has raised her grade to an 87% in the class. Elizabeth explains the subject matter covered in a very easy to understand method and I have found this to be an extremely positive experience and one that I would not only recommend to others but hope to continue for us in the future.

Beth is the best!

I was really nervous to reach out for help from someone who’s mastered the material, but working with Beth completely changed that. She makes learning fun and approachable. It feels like studying with your smart older sister! We’re able to laugh and cut up while still getting a ton of work done. Beth is knowledgeable in every health science topic I’ve brought to her and always finds ways to make complex material click. Beyond studying, she’s even helped me plan out my degree path and future goals. She’s encouraging, down to earth, and truly priceless. I often think about how much further along I’d be if I’d started working with her sooner. Beth is not just a tutor, she’s a total gift to me!

Experienced and can relate

My instructor has a unique way of how he runs his classroom and Dr. Elizabeth understands, which made the session personable to how I learn in class. She broke the material down in a way I understood and helped me understand my instructor's method. Definately ended the session with me more knowledgeable than before we started. I greatly appreciate her help.
