Hello, my name is Terry and I've been tutoring physics and math since 1999. I got my start as a peer tutor while in college. Working for the University tutoring center for 3 years, I was trained in the requisite skills for teaching/tutoring and achieved CLA Level 3 Master Tutor Certification before graduating with my degree in physics and a minor in mathematics. Upon graduation, I was hired by Clovis Community College as principal math/science tutor and served in that position for 2 years before deciding to move to Albuquerque. I was hired by CNM (then TVI) as an adult developmental math instructor beginning in 2004 and continued teaching math classes there until 2008. Concurrently, I was a high school physics and math teacher (ABQ High 2004-07 and Southridge High Beaverton 2008/09) before leaving to start my tutoring business.
Physics/math education has been my full-time job since 2002 and I have thousands of hours of one-on-one tutoring experience and several hundred satisfied clients. When I meet with students I have them attempt problems from their class and observe where the misconceptions arise. Then, I correct the issues using multiple explanations, sketches, internet articles/pics/videos, or any other source that I think may aid the student in mastering the misunderstood idea. My methods are time-tested and I still continue to learn new ways to make these ideas/skills easier for students to comprehend. There is always room for growth and improvement.
In addition to my work as an educator, I am also a musician. I have played guitar, bass and drums in multiple original rock/indie bands from the age of 21. I've played lots of shows, toured, recorded albums, etc. I enjoy composing and recording music, playing with others, and exploring song arrangement. I also enjoy hiking when the sun is out. The Columbia River Gorge is where I spend a great deal of time during the summer months. If you enjoy waterfalls, you've likely seen me out and about.
Lastly, I am a former football/basketball player. I played both in high school, including 3 state championship games. Unfortunately, my high school team only came out victorious in one of those appearances. While teaching at ABQ High I also served as the head coach of the freshman football team. I really enjoyed coaching and hope to return to it someday(likely once I'm done playing in rock n roll bands).
I tutor like I coach. Lots of positive reinforcement, correction of mechanical errors, lots of questioning to help develop conceptual understanding and connections, and repetition via exercises/problems. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
