Hi there! My name is Kyla Fury, and I'd love to help you with writing, programming, game design, and more! I'm a patient, empathetic teacher with over a decade of teaching experience who loves helping people of all skill levels, from beginners who are intimidated by the subject matter to advanced learners with a zest for pushing themselves.

I'm a writer and indie game designer with an MFA in interactive media. After graduating from USC, I worked for a game company for several years designing apps and doing VR research. After that, I spent the next decade as the Curriculum Design Lead at the EdTech company TechSmart. While there I created multiple years’ worth of CS curriculum for grades 3-12, including Python and front-end web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) courses. At the same time I also worked on the side as the Lead Writer for the game company EVC, eventually releasing the game "Wintermoor Tactics Club" in 2020 for PC and consoles.

I'd love to share my game industry experience, teaching general concepts like paper prototyping and design analysis or getting hands-on with the game engine Unity3D. I'm also happy to help with more general programming or CS needs. I love to help students of all ages discover an excitement for the subject as they see how far these tools can take them. I'm just as familiar training adults as younger students, so don't hesitate to approach me if you are a late learner! It's never too late to get started.

In addition to computer science and game design, I'm also well-qualified as a writing tutor. I've been writing both formally and informally for over two decades, and would be more than happy to help students with any stage of the writing process, from early planning to proofreading. Writing is a personal passion, and I'd love to share that with an equally passionate, creative student.

I live in the greater Seattle area, and am primarily looking to do online tutoring at this time.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I have been using Photoshop for years as part of my profession as an independent game designer. I use it to create mock-ups and graphics for design documents, as well as to generate "grey-box" examples for user interface design.
C

C

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science, which includes knowledge of the C language. The 'data structures' class I took at my undergraduate college was taught entirely in C. While earning that degree, I also tutored underclassmen in this subject.
C#

C#

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science, which included instruction in the C family of languages. I also work regularly in C# for my personal game programming projects. My most recent project has had me working in C# for the past year or so.
C++

C++

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science, which included instruction in the C family of programming languages. C++ was the first language we learned in our 'principles of programming languages' class. Additionally I have been using C#, a close relative of C++, in my own programming projects for nearly a year.
Computer Gaming

Computer Gaming

I am a game designer and writer with an MFA in Interactive Media. My game credits include a mobile game (mechanics design, level design) and a tactics RPG (lead writer). In addition, I have been running a podcast about game design for over ten years now.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I graduated with a BA in Computer Science and an MFA in Interactive Media and game design, and spent over a decade developing CS curriculum for grades 5 - 12. I have most recently taught Python and front-end web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript), but I also have basic familiarity with C/C++/C# and Java, and am capable of assisting with general programming concepts in a variety of other programming languages.
Computer Science

Computer Science

After graduating with a BA in Computer Science and an MFA in Interactive Media, I spent over a decade developing CS curriculum for grades 5 - 12. My areas of greatest expertise are Python and front-end web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript), but I am proficient in a number of languages and capable of assisting most CS students.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing and a Master's degree in Interactive Media. I have been writing in one form or another for over 20 years, including writing short stories on commission, and recently was the lead writer for a video game. I'm happy to help with overall structural and writing craft skills or with more technical grammatical, spelling, and word choice questions.
CSS

CSS

CSS was one of the subjects I taught and developed curriculum for during my time as the Curriculum Design Lead. I've also been using it, along with HTML and JavaScript, in my personal life to develop and maintain my own portfolio website for desktop computers and mobile devices.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I have over two decades of writing experience, from informal writing for personal pleasure to formal academic training (a BA in Creative Writing). My published writing credits include a video game as well as a large number of short stories written for private commission. I'm happy to help coach folks through structuring their narratives, developing characters, honing their writing skills, and can even provide low-level feedback on individual writing samples.
General Computer

I worked for over a decade as the Curriculum Design Lead at an EdTech Company. During my time there, one of the courses we developed was a front-end web dev course for high school students. This included the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. JavaScript is a great tool for making websites more engaging and interactive; I use it regularly for my own web site development.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I am an experienced technical writer who has written many design documents and similar for my work as a game designer. I have significant skill in translating concepts into easy-to-read prose for the purpose of explanation. Further, my creative writing education has given me much practice in the finer points of English grammar and syntax. I know my way around a sentence.
Python

Python

In addition to my BA in computer science and MFA in interactive media, I worked for over a decade designing CS curriculum for an EdTech company. Our flagship curriculum was our Python middle school and high school courses, which I lovingly developed and revised over the course of many years, learning a great deal about the intricacies and minutiae of Python in the process! It's one of my favorite languages to code in and to teach.
Unity

Unity

I have worked in Unity for numerous projects, both personal and published. Most recently I was the lead writer on a video game developed in the Unity engine, and interfaced heavily with it as part of that process. I have also built my own Unity engine game from the ground up, and built levels / collaborated on other games built in the engine.
