I have experience tutoring college students in both small groups and one-on-one. When I am helping students with reading difficult books, I have found it best to contextualize the work and explain the larger philosophical conversation that the book in question joins in on. Then, when the student begins writing their own paper, they can contextualize their own writing within the larger philosophical conversations of the day. I have been using this general framework, along with specialized and personalized methods and approaches tailored to each individual student, for about a year and a half.
