I have a PhD in Molecular Genetics and extensive teaching experience in college level advanced biology/biochemistry. I am passionate about education and meeting students at every level.
My interest in teaching started when I was in high school, when I would tutor on the weekends. When I was in college, I was focused on a teaching career and took every opportunity to TA, tutor, and teach. I majored in Cell and Molecular Biology, and gained teaching experience in advanced biology, chemistry, and genetics. I did the same in graduate school, where I specialized my studies in microbiology and molecular genetics, and would tutor for graduate level classes. I also sought out an adjunct professor position at a local college where I taught freshman-level biology. I was honored in graduate school to receive an award for my skills in teaching and mentoring. After I was done with my PhD, I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship where I built expertise in biochemistry and genetics, and also in pedagogical training, which means I received specialized training in teaching. During my postdoc, I had the opportunity to teach college level biology, biochemistry, and genetics.
It takes more than a lot of education to make a good teacher. My teaching philosophy centers around the individual learning styles of each student. I can pick up on the strategies that work best for each student and find creative ways to explain so they have the best chance at understanding the information at hand. My favorite type of teaching is when I can work with a student 1 on 1, and it makes me so happy to see the growth in understanding over time. I am happy to work with you on an individual basis, or as part of a group.
