I believe that math is an important subject to study, regardless of career path. It teaches logic and problem solving which is incredibly important in every field! It also teaches structure and how to complete procedural tasks given certain information and parameters. Most importantly, it teaches patience and persistence. Math isn't always easy, but there are lots of rules and resources to make things solvable if you're willing to stick with it. I strive to break things down to help them...

I strive to break things down to help them understand the how AND why of the material to give it context and meaning.

I graduated from New Mexico State University in the Fall of 2016 with my Bachelor's of Science in Applied Mathematics, a minor in economics, and a minor in dance with a 3.5 GPA, receiving recognition as a Crimson Scholar for high academic achievement.

I have years of experience working in various subjects from gymnastics to music to dance to math, and have worked with all ages - infants to adults.

I started out working as a choreographer for a couple show choirs in Arizona and began teaching private voice lessons where I realized my passion for one-on-one instruction. I then moved to New Mexico where I became involved in teaching in middle schools through education courses at my university. Here I also worked as a dance and gymnastics instructor and began tutoring mathematics. I then relocated to Minnesota where I am currently living, working as a yoga instructor and child caregiver.

I have a strong background in both "right-brain" and "left-brain" activities. I'm very active in the arts as well as mathematics. This helps me understand students from various backgrounds with different interests so I can find a way to make math more personal and fun to each individual.

If you're looking for a fun, knowledgeable, patient and passionate tutor, I'm the one for you! Send me a message today so we can get started on your love of math! I would love to hear from you and learn what your needs and wants are in regards to your mathematics education.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My classes in high school of prealgebra and algebra were the classes that made me fall in love with mathematics! They are still some of my favorite classes to teach and my favorite mathematics to practice and employ myself. As a student at New Mexico State University, I received an A in my College Algebra class in the fall of 2012.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects in math! Having a solid grasp of Algebra 1 and 2 are crucial for being successful in higher level math classes, which is one of the reasons why I love teaching this subject so much! I received an A in my college algebra class at NMSU and have tutored many students, ranging from middle schoolers to adults returning to college in algebra.
Calculus

Calculus

Through acquiring my degree in mathematics, I have completed Calculus I, II, and III and have gone on to complete several classes that involve applying calculus, including differential equations and vector calculus. I also have experience with business calculus coursework and various economics calculus classes.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry can seem tricky for some students because it involves a more concrete and hands-on approach to algebra. However, this is why I love teaching geometry! The nature of this subject allows students to make more personal connections to the material. Geometry is probably my most commonly taught subject.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is an important starting point for all your future math classes! My Prealgebra and Algebra classes are what made me fall in love with math and remain my favorite subjects to teach! I have experience working with advanced placement middle schoolers with their prealgebra and algebra classes and I also received an A in my College Algebra class at NMSU in the fall of 2012.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Through acquiring my degree in mathematics I have taken many classes involving precalculus and calculus and have seen its applications in many scenarios. This allows me to make this introductory course more relevant to future coursework. I understand the material on a deeper level and am able to answer questions meaningfully.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can seem frustrating for students when they see it for the first time! However, its not nearly as daunting as it may first seem. It's all about rules and laws, and once you understand how the basics work, you'll find that the more complex trigonometry is a piece of cake! I have tutored many students in trigonometry and its applications in high school and college.
Yoga

Yoga

I have completed my 200-hr yoga teacher training from yoga alliance approved school. I also currently own and operate a small yoga studio. I have over 5 years of experience teaching yoga and over 11 years of experience teaching fitness and movement.

Very professional and down to earth.

I have to say as a mom I was desperate yesterday looking for the right person to tutor my son. Out of all the candidates there was something that caught my attention in one of Rachel's previous reviews. She does involved the person that she is tutoring. She was friendly and extremely helpful. My son loved her. From the get go she made him feel at ease. We will certainly schedule with her again. Thank you

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Rachel was extremely helpful in helping me complete my geometry lessons for my graduation requirements. She is very knowledgeable and patient. I wish I had contacted her earlier in my semester I would have had a better overall foundation for success in geometry.

Rachel is kind and understanding, she is passionate about teaching math no matter how long you have been away from the subject.

I like how Rachel includes you in the lesson. It's not all about if you follow this step which will lead you to this step and so on and on. Rachel lets the students get involved in the problem solving process. Then if your answer is not correct she will take the time to explain why the problem did not work out. Rachel goes that extra step to help the learner become a better and more understanding student and the way things are done to check yourself. For that I appreciate her expertise and her passion to teach Algebra. In just two lessons I have learned more than I could have ever imagined by just watching a learning video. MTP

A teacher who explains why, not just how!

Rachel was able to explain not only the process needed to solve the problems, but the reasons why the process is there. This in depth explanation helped my daughter see the bigger picture and the equations finally clicked for her. Rachel was someone that we will use again!

Awesome experience and proven results!

I had four lessons with Rachel L because I was struggling in my college math class. This was my first time using an online tutoring program and I was very impressed. I had a grade of D at the time I started with Rachel and by the time the semester was over I got a B on my math final and brought my whole class grade up to a C. Rachel L is a fantastic tutor. She's patient, understanding, professional, and just has an all around great attitude and personality. I highly recommend her if you or someone you know is in need of a math tutor. Also, the Wyzant platform is very easy to use and a seamless experience. I was extremely satisfied with both the Wyzant system and my tutor, Rachel L. I owe a lot of my academic success to her!

Awesome Teacher

Rachel has tutored my daughter in Calculus AB for for a month now. She has been really patient and understanding with her teaching. She prepared her mock tests to go over in class so that my kid would have a real testing challenge. Thank you Rachel for your efforts!

Fantastic!

Rachel is amazing! She is a natural teacher. She makes things clear and accessible and doesn't move on until she is convinced the student is understanding the concepts. She goes far beyond the standard understand the concept, memorize the formula, and find the answer. She gives the student tools for when they meet those problems that aren't that simple. She reaches for a greater understanding and I very much appreciate her approach! Kaylee and Grace have very much enjoyed meeting with her!
