I am here as a tutor because I love the opportunity to help any student grasp concepts that are difficult or intimidating. I am here as a tutor because I love the opportunity to help any student grasp concepts that are difficult or intimidating. I do this by presenting and iterating through material in a tailored way that makes topics simpler and more relatable for each student’s learning style. Often, during tutoring sessions I will use colored pens on blank printer paper to visually engage the student by presenting diagrams and outlining key points. After the session the student can keep these sheets as a reference and a refresher that can continue to help them beyond the session time.

I have tutored fellow students in my math and science classes throughout my academic career and had the experience of seeing what teaching and learning styles work best in preparation for classes and for different standardized tests—including the ACT, SAT, AP Exams, and the MCAT.

I am here to help students transform math and science, subjects that can seem like obstacles between them and their goals, into to tools to help them get there.

Sincerely,
Corban S.

P.S. A bit about me:
I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Ed Boyden. I have enjoyed learning and understanding math and science my whole life. I also enjoy doing photography and spoken word poetry in my free time.

Calculus

Calculus

I have taken AP Calculus AB & BC and received a 5 on the AP exams. I have also performed well in college-level, calculus-intensive classes, including: Calculus III (A+ final grade), Engineering Mathematics I (B+), and Engineering Mathematics II (A-) at Washington University in St. Louis. I have tutored many students on campus and in high school in calculus. Through my experience of using calculus in various classes and across different fields of study, I have gained an essential understanding that enables me to convey and explain calculus concepts in a way that makes them less dry and more interesting and logical.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have taken AP Chemistry and received a 5 on the AP exam. I have also taken college-level General Chemistry I w/Lab and General Chemistry II w/ Lab at Washington University in St. Louis and received an A in those classes. I tutored many students in high school. Additionally, in college, I have tutored others in General Chemistry as an "Appointment Based Mentor" and have led weekly group help sessions for chemistry over the past 2 years.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I received an A+ in college level Differential Equations at Washington University in St. Louis. I tutor other students occasionally in Differential Equations now.
Java

Java

I completed AP Computer Science, a Java-based programming class, and received a 5 on the AP Exam. I also received an A+ in a Java programming class at Washington University in St. Louis. Additionally, I was offered a TA position for that computer science class I. I have tutored, and continue to tutor, students in Java programming at the university.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have completed and performed very well (> 90%) in a MATLAB and Simulink Course at Washington U. in St. Louis. I have used MATLAB extensively in a quantitative physiology laboratory for data analysis and visualization, time to frequency domain transformations, and function vectorizations. I have used the MATLAB real-time simulation environment, Simulink, to model and analyze differential equations and the systems they represent. I have helped, and continue to help, college students understand and use MATLAB and Simulink effectively.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

Received an A+ in Organic Chemistry I and a B+ in Organic Chemistry II at Washington University in St. Louis. I was offered a TA position for Organic Chemistry I. Tutored and continue to tutor college students in Organic Chemistry at the university.
Photography

Photography

I have practiced as a photographer for five years. I have substantial experience with traditional black and white film (35 mm, medium and large format), digital portrait photography, event photography, and fine art photography. I am able to teach students the technical skills of photography, including DSLR camera operation, exposure control, lighting, subject posing, and image editing. Very Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

This is the first tutor my teenager has felt made a difference in terms of helping him connect the dots in both understanding the material and utilizing effective, time saving strategies. As a mom, I found Corbin to be very personable with just the right amount of both interpersonal and technical skills. Will definitely work with him again.
