About Miriam

Hi, I'm Miriam. I am double majoring in chemical engineering and computational math with a minor in classical piano at University of Massachusetts Amherst, Commonwealth Honors College. I have been receiving Chancellor's Scholarship. I lived in South Korea, Australia, Canada and I moved to America in 2012. I can interact with students from various cultures. I am patient and open-minded. I learned math from South Korea and America. In South Korea, speed and accuracy are two most significant skills for getting good grades in tests. In America, learning step by step but making sure to understand the concept deeply is the important thing. Therefore, I learned math deeply and always had extra time left in exams. I would like to share my math skills and strategies to students who are struggling with math and see their progresses.

I've been tutoring math (algebra 1 to calculus 1, 2 and SAT, ACT math) since March, 2014 and so far I have tutored over 25 students. They all have experienced a significant grade improvement: D to A-, B- to A+ and etc. I worked as a teaching assistant for Calculus 1 in Fall 2015 and for ChemEng120 Fundamentals in Spring 2016 at UMass, Amherst. I have been volunteering at a local high school (Amherst Regional High School) as a teaching assistant for precalculus honors and AP BC calculus since 2013.

I studied TOEFL for one month and got 109 out of 120. I got 770 in SAT Math and 780 in SAT Subject test Math II.
I am a black belt, 3rd degree in taekwondo. I specialize in poomse. I used to volunteer at the Amherst Martial Center teaching from little kids to adults.
I played piano for 16 years and I am minoring music at UMass, Amherst, studying under professor Gilles Vonsattel.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Since March, I have been tutoring an 8th grader who is learning Algebra 1 at school. He was a C student, but now his average test grade is B. I have a good relationship with the student and his parents.

Algebra 2

After algebra 2 students had sessions with me their grades went up from B- to A.

Calculus

I took AP BC Calculus class in my senior year of high school. I got an A+ in the class and received a Math Achievement Award for excelling in that class. I took the AP exam in 2014, and got 5 out of 5.

Chemical Engineering

I am majoring in chemical engineering at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I am currently working as a teaching assistant for ChE120 which is a fundamental course for chemical engineering where you learn about mass balances on multiple units and system with chemical reactions. Moreover the course includes a basic introduction for thermodynamics.

Differential Equations

I took differential equations in my sophomore year of college. I received over 100% and got an A. I taught myself in this subject and therefore I have an in-depth understanding in diff eq.

Korean

My first language is Korean. I studied in South Korean middle school and high school. I graduated my Korean middle school ranking 8th out of 320 students and I got merit scholarship when I entered Korean high school. I got 96/100 in Korean from KPSAT (Korean PSAT).

Linear Algebra

I took proof-based linear algebra in my sophomore year of college at Amherst College. My professor was amazing and learned this subject in depth.

Piano

I played piano for 14 years and I have done more than 10 recitals in my life. I got 1st place in the Youth Competition in Korea when I was 5 years old. I got 3rd place in the Young Pianist Competition in Seoul, Korea when I was in 4th grade. Recently, I got 2nd place in the age section at Young Artist Piano Competition. I passed classic piano audition at University of Massachusetts and I am planning to either double major with Chemical Engineering or minor it. I am teaching my younger sister currently.

Precalculus

I took Precalculus honors in my junior year of high school. I got an A+ in the class and received a Math Achievement Award for doing well. In my senior year of high school, I was a teacher's assistant for Precalculus class.

SAT Math

I got 770 in SAT Math and 780 in SAT Subject test Math II. I took Precalculus and Calculus in high school and got A+ in both subjects. I always had plenty of time left in SAT math and I can tutor students strategies to do faster and accurately in SAT.

Trigonometry

I took trigonometry when I was a junior at high school. It was part of Precalculus course. I got A+ in that class and Math Achievement Award at the end of the year. Also I was a teaching assistant for that class when I was a senior at high school.
In SAT Subject test Math II, trigonometry is included. I got 780 in that subject test which proves that I understood the material.
