I started playing the cello when I was 13 years old and I have been playing ever since! I am originally from Louisville Kentucky and began studying the cello at the University of Louisville School of Music while I was a cello major at a performing arts high school. I went on to receive my undergraduate degree in cello performance from the Eastman School of Music in 2015 and freelancing in Chicago.

I love sharing the cello with anyone and everyone that wants to learn how to play! I have experience teaching students of different ages and of different playing levels. I have taught 30, 45 and 60 minute online, in-person and in-studio lessons and I create each lesson to accommodate each student's interests, motivations and goals. I believe in technique serving as a means, not an end, in happy, fulfilling and meaningful cello playing and emphasize balance, comfort and enjoyment.

I have over 19 years of experience playing the cello, playing solo, in small ensembles and in orchestras around the United States. I have performed in numerous world-renowned concert halls some of which include Koussevitsky Shed, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Hilbert Circle Theater and Whitney Hall. I also frequently perform, collaborate, tour and record with various non-classical artists and bands and have appeared on numerous studio albums. I have experience teaching students of different ages and playing levels.

If you are brand new to the cello or have been playing for a while, I would love the opportunity to help you achieve your goals! Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have, looking forward to talking with you!

Ear Training

Ear Training

I began studying music at age 13 and spent 4 years of high school and an additional 4 years of my undergraduate degree in music studying and practicing ear training regularly in formal settings. My education in ear training was extensive and involved solfege, sight singing, rhythm practice, sight reading, composition, cello and piano.
Music History

Music History

From my time as a music student at a performing arts high school through my 4 years as an undergraduate music student, I received regular music history education as a part of my musical studies. Courses involved not only historical relevance but musical styles, impacts, influences and meaningful applications to modern music.

Highly Professional and Knowledgeable Tutor

Jacks meets with each of two my sons weekly. He is always prepared, excited to teach the cello, and patient while the boys work their way through his lessons. He takes his art seriously, and it inspires his students to do the same. He has even gotten my shy sons to engage, all the while being wonderfully professional. We highly recommend him.

Excellent Teacher!

I’m an older student who just decided to try cello. Jack is patient, thorough, and has spent a lot of necessary time showing me correct posture, hand and arm positions and has helped me through getting my instrument set up appropriately. He is clearly passionate about the cello and teaching. I highly recommend Jack!

Great tutor!

Jack is is an excellent cello teacher. He is very good with my son, a freshman in high school, a somewhat apathetic student. He is teaching him all aspects of musicality: rhythm , tone, etc. He has a friendly personality but specific in his instruction. He is making great progress. Highly recommend.
