About Jason

Jason received his BA from Amherst College in Fine Arts and also holds a BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During his academic career he completed several independent animated shorts including 'Chushingura: The Tale of the Loyal Retainers' which earned him 'Best Animated Short' in the 'Five-College Film Festival, and his Master's Thesis 'Peristalsis' which was exhibited at the Gene Siskel Theater in Chicago. In 2006, at The World Animation Fair, he premiered his independent feature, 'Penguin Delinquency,' and in 2008, completed a medical animation entitled 'Implantation: New Frontiers and the Last Barrier to Human Reproduction' with grants obtained from the Rinehart Center for Reproductive Medicine and Organon Pharmaceuticals. The 16-minute, 3D animated film was shown at the 2009, American Society for Reproductive Medicine Video Session. In 2010, he completed another independent short 'The Tigress,' an adaptation from one of the Jataka Tales.

Jason has worked at Anzovin Animation Studios in Massachusetts, Noodlesoup Productions in New York City on the 'Venture Brothers' cartoon series, and at Calabash Animation in Chicago on various commercial endeavors. He is an adjunct professor of 2D and 3D animation for broadcast and gaming, in addition to special topics including digital compositing, lighting, rendering, rigging, and dynamics. At Giannini Creative he worked as a CG Animation Artist in their 3D digital division producing work for clients including Nestle, Hershey's, Gillette, and Coca Cola. He was a rigger and lead animator for the Effie award-winning 'Smart' Hotels.com ads featured in the November 2010 issue of 3D World Magazine and, in collaboration with Studio One Digital, was lead rigger and animator for McDonald's 'Happy' Campaign. He is currently animating for Little Genius Games on a children's educational game.

He has over 15 years of teaching experience at five top art schools in the Chicagoland area at graduate, undergraduate, and high school levels and is adept with digital tools like Photoshop, After Effects, and Autodesk Maya. He also enjoys traditional painting, sculpting, carving, and metal work for accessory and fashion design. His tutoring assistance has helped students get work into film festivals, undergrad, and graduate programs alike.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Animation

I have taught many collegiate level digital art classes in both 2D and 3D animation at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, DePaul University, The Illinois Institute of Art, and Tribeca Flashpoint College.

Autodesk Maya

I have been using Maya for over fifteen years in both professional studio environments as well as in the classroom. I am fluent in all aspects of the program including modeling, rigging, animation, materials, lighting, VFX, and rendering.

Ballroom Dancing

My wife and I met teaching ballroom dance at Fred Astaire in downtown Chicago while I was in grad school and are also familiar with the Arthur Murray curriculum. I am fluent in Foxtrot, Waltz, American Tango, Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha, Rumba, and East Coast Swing (and some Lindy Hop).

Computer Gaming

Having been raised on video games, from the Atari 2600 to the PS4, I always dreamed of moving from consumer to creator.
My study of animation lead me to numerous opportunities to work on video games with designers and programmers alike. While I do not directly code or work in engines, I am thoroughly versed in the aesthetic and technical artistry of the gaming industry and teach modeling, rigging, and non-linear animation for video games.
I am currently working as an animator for Little Genius Games on a spelling game for children.

Drawing

I have taught many collegiate level art classes at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, DePaul University, The Illinois Institute of Art, and Tribeca Flashpoint College. I paint and draw regularly and enjoy fashion, scientific, and natural history illustration.

Film

I have taken a variety of film classes, written about many films in graduate school, and teach acting and animation history which inescapably intersects the world of film theory and practice.
Additionally, as a 3D compositor, I deal with issues of color-correction, lighting, staging, and editing as I attempt to blur the distinction between the "real" of what is shot, and the "virtual" of what is created. The best work, since the dawn of cinema history, makes these disparate worlds indistinguishable--and that fantastic illusion compels me to be the avid cinemaphile that I am.

Graphic Design

I have taught many digital art classes and enjoy the intricate and communicative components of good graphic design. Helping students understand aesthetic, perspective, color, typography, visual hierarchy, and balance is my greatest pleasure.

Painting

I have taught many collegiate level art classes at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, DePaul University, The Illinois Institute of Art, and Tribeca Flashpoint College. I paint and draw regularly and enjoy fashion, scientific, and natural history illustration.

Seriously awesome and knowledgeable!

Jason has been absolutely amazing to have as a tutor. Most tutors cater to certain students' learning styles more than others, but I don't think Jason would have trouble tutoring anyone, he's extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of the software we used. He's also very friendly and so passionate about teaching, you'll be able to tell in the first 2 minutes that he loves teaching and he wants to b
