Hi, my name is Chris and I am a Software Engineer who has been working full time in Chicago the last 5+ years. I have been tutoring since high school and I believe one of the best ways to keep your skills sharp is to help others by sharing knowledge and experience. I pride myself on being very flexible in my approach to best accommodate a wide variety of learning styles and preferences. Above all, I love helping others, and getting to share knowledge about topics I am passionate about is certainly an added bonus. I pride myself on keeping my rates significantly lower than what I make at my full time job because I genuinely enjoy teaching. In addition to my tutoring services, I have volunteered my time with programs such as the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT, Baltimore Branch) and Trilogy web dev boot camp.

I graduated with honors from Purdue University (Computer Engineering, 2015) where I was a recipient of the Purdue Presidential Scholarship and AT&T foundation scholarship. Some of my achievements during my time a student include being enrolled in the Engineering Honors program as well as being awarded the Barrett Robinson Design Award as well as recognition for the best individual subsystem for my group senior design project. I spent a couple years working in tech consulting where I spent time on several high profile, public facing projects such as the new Chicago Metra Transit site. I spent several years working as a senior software engineer for a Fortune100 company until just under a year ago when I left to pursue an opportunity with a fast growing tech startup.

Approved Subjects

Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I have a degree from Purdue University for Computer Engineering. Starting from my time as a student, I helped peers and younger students with courses such Data Structures and Object Oriented Programming. Now as a professional software engineer who has worked for several companies, I still enjoy tutoring programming subjects as a way to stay sharp and help others.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I have a degree from Purdue University for Computer Engineering. During my time as a student, I helped peers and younger students with courses such Data Structures and Object Oriented Programming. I have also interned for several companies and to date, have been employed as a Software Engineer at a consulting firm for a little over a year. Along with having covered important CS fundamentals, I have had personal project experience as well work experience in a variety of languages such as C# (ASP.NET), PHP (Wordpress, Drupal), Python (variety of applications), Java (built a functioning compiler), and the frontend webstack of HTML/CSS/JS.
JavaScript

JavaScript

Despite spending most of my time working as a backend developer, I have probably touched Javascript the most out of any other language. My JS experience ranges from interacting with DOM elements to making AJAX calls to the server to implementing/interfacing 3rd party javascript libraries/APIs such as Esri Maps/Google Maps and Pubnub.
JQuery

JQuery

I have a degree from Purdue University for Computer Engineering. During my time as a student, I helped peers and younger students with courses such Data Structures and Object Oriented Programming. I have also interned for several companies and to date, have been employed as a Software Engineer at a consulting firm for a little over a year. I spend a lot of time working with Javascript in general and would consider myself 'Jquery-fluent', where I am more productive using Jquery over 'vanilla' JS in 95% of applications. I am also confident in my abilities to explain the nuances of Jquery to someone who may have only ever seen Javascript code in their life and help them integrate Jquery smoothly in their everyday development.
Python

Python

Have developed in Python over the years for academic, personal, and work related purposes. Have experience with popular libraries such as Numpy and Matplotlib as well as a variety of topics such as web development (Flask, Django), application development (PyQt), web scraping, data science, etc... As a software developer today, I use Python regularly as a general purpose tool to parse files and automate processes. I am confident in my abilities to help Python beginners as well as first time programmers better understand the language and best leverage its unique capabilities to create something awesome. Feel free to checkout my github (purdoo) to see some of my sample projects, many of which are written predominantly in Python.

Excellent JavaScript Tutor

I have been very pleased working with Chris to learn JavaScript. A complete beginner to coding, I found it critical to find a tutor who could not only help me complete my programming assignments but all the while convey the fundamentals and "how to think like a programmer", all of which are crucial for success in the field of software development. Chris has managed to do all three, as he thoroughly explains concepts, answers all my questions and makes me think critically as we work through the problems. This approach, coupled with his very reasonable and competitive rate, makes me highly recommend Chris as a tutor!

I'm very satisfied with the tutoring I received from Chris! He goes the extra mile to help you meet deadlines--even if he has to burn the midnight oil. He is clearly determined to help his students succeed. He provides efficient and clear instruction on relatively complicated CS subjects. Don't hesitate to hire him!
