I attended high school in Westchester County, New York, where I was inducted into the National Honor Society my sophomore year. I received enough Advanced Placement course credits to begin college at Indiana University as a sophomore, and graduated in three years with departmental honors and 1/10 point short of general honors. My degree (2011) was in an individualized major combining bioanthropology and nutrition, including ancillary biology, chemistry, physiology, and statistics courses.

I attended graduate school at the University of Florida where I received a master of science in nutrition (2013). I took graduate-level courses in biochemistry, metabolism, macro and micronutrients, immunology, laboratory techniques, probability, and statistics. For my master’s thesis project I studied the effect of probiotics on digestive and immune health and published my findings in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

In 2015 I took the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to reapply to graduate school and amongst two tests received a 159 (81st percentile) in verbal, 156 (64th percentile) in math, and a 5.0 (93rd percentile) in writing.

I completed Columbia University's Postbac Premed program in May of 2019.

I currently attend Nova Southeastern University Medical School.

In closing, I try to make a habit of practicing all aspects of my life. In so doing, I notice growth opportunities, academic or not, that I can share with my students for their own improvement.

Proofreading

Proofreading

I began proofreading as a tutor through the National Honor Society in 2007 after having excelled in High School AP English Language & Composition. I have continued to serve as a proofreader and edited the following essay types: argumentative, literary analysis, narrative, descriptive, and expository. I have also edited scientific writing for publication as well as job/academic application essays and business letters. In 2018 I took the course The Art of The Essay at Columbia University/Barnard College to continue developing my essay writing and proofreading abilities.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have tutored a great number of hours of elementary math for kindergarten through fifth grade. I teach this material through patient and repetitive explanations, allowing students many opportunities within a single lesson to learn the same material. When appropriate, I explain the solution to an answer in multiple ways, and by providing options I make it clear to the child that he/she can do this, one way or another!

Knowledgeable and patient

My son had an Algebra finals test and he was struggling with Polynomials. Sam worked with him for an hour and my son came away with a better understanding. He took his final the next day and got a B. This was his highest test grade in Algebra for the semester. Je ended up passing the test. Sam and his tutoring had a lot to do with it.

Makes my daughter laugh while learning!

I have a foster daughter who has learning differences, never had any confidence in her ability to learn math, and went through emotional trauma. She has always pushed back any help because she is insecure. With Sam, she laughs, willing to do the work. He sends out great lesson summaries which then I can share with her school so that she gets more comprehensive support. Thank you Sam. You are being an important part of her recovery & learning.

What a major difference!

My son had his first session with Sam and what a hug difference. He was patient encouraging and he made my son feel comfortable. What I liked about the lesson was he challenged him to answer math question another way. Instead on using counting blocks and fingers. He showed him a better way by using his memory and repeated repetitions, my son did well. I was really impressed. I’m looking forward to many more lesson with Sam. I would recommend.

Excellent tutor

He is very patience and acknowledgable. I like how he asks questions to help my daugther reflect on her essay. English is my 2nd language so I really needed the help of someone who guide my daugther on the process to think more critically. I am very happy with Sam, he is very respectful and kind.

My son has only had one lesson so far. He seems to like it and pay attention for the most part. Sam is very patient which is important with young children!
