About Sam

I attended high school in Westchester County, New York, where I was inducted into the National Honor Society my sophomore year. I received enough Advanced Placement course credits to begin college at Indiana University as a sophomore, and graduated in three years with departmental honors and 1/10 point short of general honors. My degree (2011) was in an individualized major combining bioanthropology and nutrition, including ancillary biology, chemistry, physiology, and statistics courses.

I attended graduate school at the University of Florida where I received a master of science in nutrition (2013). I took graduate-level courses in biochemistry, metabolism, macro and micronutrients, immunology, laboratory techniques, probability, and statistics. For my master’s thesis project I studied the effect of probiotics on digestive and immune health and published my findings in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

In 2015 I took the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to reapply to graduate school and amongst two tests received a 159 (81st percentile) in verbal, 156 (64th percentile) in math, and a 5.0 (93rd percentile) in writing. The earliest I could re-enter school is Fall 2017 and until then have a very flexible schedule to tutor.

In closing, I try to make a habit of practicing all aspects of my life. In so doing, I notice growth opportunities, academic or not, that I can share with my students for their own improvement.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I've been working with diagnosed ADD/ADHD students since 2007. I specialize in tutoring children struggling with focus and successful completion of academic work, and can patiently guide them through the process. I often impart them with a few tips and tricks for developing improved focus and patience for their learning path along the way.

Elementary Math

I have tutored a great number of hours of elementary math for kindergarten through fifth grade. I teach this material through patient and repetitive explanations, allowing students many opportunities within a single lesson to learn the same material. When appropriate, I explain the solution to an answer in multiple ways, and by providing options I make it clear to the child that he/she can do this, one way or another!

Macintosh

I've been a Mac computer tutor for five years and specialize in teaching Mac apps and how to use the computer comfortably to achieve your goals. I have abundant experience with patience as a computer teacher.

Nutrition

I hold a Master of Science in Nutrition from the University of Florida and have twice been the teaching assistant there for the course "Nutrition Through The Life Cycle." Additionally, I also have a nutrition publication in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

The right "fit" for my son! Excellent Tutor!!! — My son has had trouble concentrating in school since he was little. He was told by his teachers that he was unable to focus in class. I decided to search for a tutor who would be able to teach him and bring out his potential. I knew my son was intelligent, but I needed a way to pull that out. I saw Sam's bio, and I noticed he had worked with other kids with focusing issues. I also liked that ...
