Greetings! My name is Katie, and I am a "highly effective," certified, high school English teacher and a dyslexia tutor. I am also a freelance editor and writing consultant. I received my B.A. in English: Education and Literature. I have taught overseas and in Colorado for the past twelve years. Given the range of schools I have taught in, I possess a variety of strategies and techniques to help students learn and achieve.

I am currently in the process of being certified as an Orton-Gillingham (OG) tutor. Orton-Gillingham is a direct instruction, systematic, and multi-sensory approach to teaching reading based on providing a strong foundation in understanding phonics and the rules of the English language. While using this approach, I have seen students of all ages become confident and fluent readers. Even partway through the program, my Barton Reading & Spelling students stop stressing about difficulties with reading and start to enjoy it!

One of my favorite parts about teaching is the "Aha!" moment -- that moment when a student finally understands what you have been working on together. I love watching as students gain confidence in their abilities as learners, readers, writers, and thinkers. My goal for all students I work with is for them to become confident and competent readers and writers so that they can utilize these skills for the rest of their lives.

I am an absolute English enthusiast! I love the language, writing, and composition. I am passionate and want to empower my students. I am creative and have worked with many students who have IEPs, 504s, or who have struggled with literacy. I am not easily daunted. On the other hand, I've worked with students in advanced classes as well as ones acquiring their masters. I am up for the challenge.

Finally, as one who once struggled with English, I empathize with my students and will support them on their individual journeys to grow in confidence and strength in English.

Approved Subjects

Grammar

Grammar

Through university and beyond, I have studied different approaches to English grammar as well as style. It is something that I regularly teach the fundamentals of as well as assist in honing as part of communicating with precision. Whether it's subject and predicate, all the comma rules, or citing sources, I can help bring my students from novices to masters of grammar.
Literature

Literature

I fell in love with English literature my junior year of high school and haven't stopped studying deeply and more broadly since. I studied literature as well as education for my bachelor's which included studying Shakespeare, English literature to and since 1789, American Literature before and after 1865, as well as world literature to and since the Renaissance. I have been teaching and tutoring students to learn through literature since before I graduated. I love helping others learn how to analyze and discuss texts meaningfully but also how to appreciate technique and good storytelling.
Proofreading

Proofreading

While I have never been a proofreader as my exclusive profession, as a teacher, I have been the reader of countless essays, innumerable emails, as well as the feedback giver on hundreds of work-based materials because reading carefully is part of the skillset I have. Because of my background in grammar, studying style, and working in different areas of research, I read thoroughly and can also teach others how to do so. I was a writing consultant starting in college and haven't stopped.
Reading

Reading

For those who need specialized assistance in reading, my training as a Barton Reading & Spelling tutor makes me adept in helping students to develop phonemic awareness, prosody, decoding skills, and more. My tried-and-true tactics have helped many students love reading because it isn't hard anymore, and I've helped cultivate a love of reading with students as old as 38 to date. In general, I was not always a lover of reading myself but had teachers who helped foster a love of reading in me, and that is a gift I cherish the opportunity to pass on to others. I am well read in a wide breadth of books and am always looking for the next literary gem that I can share with students, so they can see what's so great about reading and also just feel equipped to succeed in school, work, and life.
Writing

Writing

Whether it's working on fundamentals for the sake of organization and clarity or something more specific and academic, I have been teaching and providing feedback on writing for over a decade. I am a strong and detailed editor and am also a writer who can help generate content or guide others in learning how to create meaningful writing for themselves whether it's for school, work product, or a personal goal. Writing effectively is powerful, and I want everyone to experience that.

Totally engaging, pleasant, compotent and intelliegnt!

My daughter enjoyed Katie's session so much that she begged me to stay on longer with Ms. Katie. I was shocked because the subject matter was challenging, but Ms. Katie, so how, made it simple and enjoyable. I am so impressed that I am purchasing a package of many sessions.
