About Julia Rose

Struggling and falling behind in a class does not feel good. If you are frustrated in class or embarrassed about your grades, please let me help!

I will help you complete missing assignments, prepare for upcoming or make up tests, and fill in the gaps in your understanding to make learning easier in the future.

I also tutor ACT and SAT preparation. If you've taken either of these tests before and want to boost your score (or if it's your first time), learning test strategy will help your performance, and show you how to make the test work best for you.

I have been tutoring for 9 years, and I love what I do. Regardless of whether you are preparing for a math test, writing an essay, or studying for your college entrance exams, I will work hard to help you achieve your goals and build confidence.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have successfully tutored ADD and ADHD students in math, writing, and standardized test preparation.

When working with a student who has difficulty focusing, I approach the subject matter in different ways until I find one that catches their attention and then modify my teaching methods to what works best for that student.

I also try to break up tutoring by offering frequent breaks and covering material at the pace the student is absorbing it, so that they stay interested in the new content as we cover it.

College Counseling

The majority of my tutoring is focused on ACT and SAT preparation, so I very often assist high school students in determining their safety and reach schools, as well as which combinations of scores should be sent to which school.

I am comfortable helping students research schools, plan college visits, prepare for interviews, and prepare applications, including entrance essays and personal statements.

I also work regularly with students who are being recruited for NCAA sports and am familiar with how that can impact the admissions process.

Dyslexia

I have tutored students with dyslexia (and related visual learning challenges such as Irlen Syndrome) for several years.

I adapt my tutoring methods to this type of student by reading text aloud and offering to take notes during the session that the student can revisit later, so that they can spend tutoring time focusing on understanding the material, rather than struggling to access it.

Sociology

I have taken sociology classes at both high school and college levels, and received A's. I have also tutored several students taking sociology classes with good results.

I find this subject interesting and enjoy how it interacts with other areas, such as psychology and anthropology.

Study Skills

For all of my long term tutoring students, I assist in managing deadlines and due dates, keeping pace with multiple classes, and organizational skills for notebooks, laptops, and assignment books.

I also teach basic note taking skills and how to study from notes. I find it especially helpful to show students how to use their notes to find holes in their understanding so that they can research or ask about missing information before it affects grades.

Writing

I have always liked and been good at writing. I won a number of essay contests in high school, participated in a writing intensive honors program in college, and actually enjoy writing term papers.

I am familiar with various methods of in-text and bibliographical citation, including MLA, APA, and Chicago. I enjoy tutoring writing students because I get to help students refine arguments, structure their rhetoric, and find their own voice and style on the page.

Julia is wonderful!!

My daughter loves Julia! She relates to her on a level that is fun and knowledgeable and completely gets teens. My daughter (16 1/2) was very resistant to a tutor and after the first meeting, she really looks forward to seeing her. Julia breaks things into understandable pieces and has made my daughter feel empowered. So glad we found her!!
