Salve/te! My name is Matt, and I am an enthusiastic teacher of Latin and Ancient Greek! I earned my BA in Classical Languages and French Studies from the University of Texas at Austin (2023), and my MA in Latin from the University of Colorado Boulder (2025), where I was the Beginning Latin I instructor in 2024-2025. I have twice received the CU Classics Department's King and Hill Award for the Teaching of Latin, and I have been tutoring or teaching classical languages over the last eight years.
For my MA thesis, I developed a simplified linguistics-based method for teaching Latin. This makes learning Latin word forms (morphology) easier than in other traditional methods, and it has been highly successful and popular with my students. I can help make learning Latin easier and more enjoyable for you, too!
I am familiar with many teaching methods and approaches (e.g. grammar-translation, reading method, active Latin, etc.), each of which I use where appropriate. I am also familiar with the most common textbooks, like Wheelock, Lingua Latina, the Cambridge Latin Course, etc. Experience has taught me that no one method works for every student all of the time, and so my own approach is flexible and adaptable to diverse learning styles.
I have taught both traditional and non-traditional students in a university classroom setting, as well as online (through Zoom). I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds! With expert guidance and consistency, I will help you to become a highly proficient reader of Latin and/or Ancient Greek! Let's get started!
