Hi, I’m Nickie, a self-proclaimed grammar geek and voracious reader with 20 years of experience helping students fall in love with language. I began tutoring with the Literacy Council in 2006 and have been teaching ever since. I’ve worked with K-12 students, adult English language learners, and adults returning to school. I’ve taught one-on-one, in small groups, and in full classrooms, including a year in Spain teaching six high school English classes.

I graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in English Literature and Language Studies, and I’m TEFL/TESOL certified through International TEFL Academy and INTESOL Worldwide. I know how confusing English can be for native and nonnative speakers alike. I can help.

How I teach: Every lesson is built around your needs, skill level, and pace. My goal is for you to truly understand the material and feel confident using it. I’m available for questions between sessions and happy to try new approaches until something clicks.

What we can work on: reading comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed; phonics and grammar; writing, syntax, and punctuation; ELL/ESL conversation and fluency; essay writing and TOEFL prep.
