I became a math major because I couldn't imagine school without doing mathematics. I've worked with students who feel exactly the opposite: they can't imagine enjoying school when "doing" mathematics is part of the equation. In my eight years of teaching (Pre-algebra through Precalculus) and 16 years of tutoring (Pre-algebra through Calculus as well as Integrated Math 1-3 as part of the Common Core Curriculum), I've discovered that many students who just didn't "get math," achieved...

I became a math major because I couldn't imagine school without doing mathematics. I've worked with students who feel exactly the opposite: they can't imagine enjoying school when "doing" mathematics is part of the equation. In my eight years of teaching (Pre-algebra through Precalculus) and 16 years of tutoring (Pre-algebra through Calculus as well as Integrated Math 1-3 as part of the Common Core Curriculum), I've discovered that many students who just didn't "get math," achieved understanding in a one-on-one setting. Freed from distractions and peer influence and given space to ask all of their questions, they start to "get math,"; they grow in confidence; and mathematics becomes a subject they comprehend and appreciate.

I've also worked with students who enjoy "doing" the math but find that one-on-one tutoring enables their surface level understanding of certain concepts to morph into a deeper conceptual level. This deeper understanding reduces frustration (for both students and parents alike), increases confidence, and frequently leads to improved test scores.

I have over 20 years of experience tutoring or teaching Algebra 1 students. I I have tutored Integrated Math 1 students since circa 2014 when California introduced the Common Core Curriculum. In Integrated Math 1, we cover the first part of Algebra 1, the first part of Geometry, and some initial concepts in Probability and Statistics.

I have been tutoring Algebra 2 students ever since my youngest son went to kindergarten in the fall of 2000. Algebra 2 understanding needs to be strong and deep for a student to succeed in Precalculus and Calculus. With that in mind, I aim to assist the student in knowing the principles behind the solution techniques we use in Algebra 2 rather than just memorizing "tricks" for each type of problem. Knowing the 'why" will help them tackle and solve problems in all of their future math endeavors.

I have ten years of experience tutoring Calculus AB & BC students from Sacramento area high schools. Students move from manipulating rules of Calculus at a surface level understanding of the subject to comprehending the underlying principles of Calculus which then apply in a wide variety of real-life problem situations throughout the course.

Each course in Integrated Math 1-3, as part of the Common Core Curriculum, covers sections of Algebra, Geometry, and Probability and Statistics. I have four years of experience tutoring Common Core Math students ever since the Common Core curriculum was implemented in California. For 14 years before that, I taught or tutored Algebra I&II and Geometry, subjects which form the far majority of topics covered in Integrated Math 1-3. I studied Probability and Statistics as part of my Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics degree.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus sets the stage for many of the concepts presented in Calculus. Because of that fact, I strive to help my students understand the underlying mathematical principles that apply in their work with various types of functions. These principles can be used as guides for solving a variety of application problems rather than help the student with just one kind of problem or topic. We also discuss how a particular topic in Precalculus is a foreshadowing of concepts that will be dealt with in more depth in a Calculus course.

I’ve tutored students in trigonometry for twelve years. Helping students see the visual representation of trigonometry with triangles and the unit circle helps students understand the trig concepts more clearly.

I tutor several Trigonometry students every school year as part of their Precalculus coursework. I use a patterns type approach for graphing transformations of sine, cosine, and tangent graphs. I relate Trigonometry to other math subjects, so students can see the connections between the subjects and the connections aid their understanding.
