About Joe

I began tutoring in math and science as a sophomore in college and instantly fell in love with the experience. During this time, I've tutored over 60 students in the Stockton and Sacramento area, ranging from as young as 4 years old to as old as 55 years of age. I can truly say that I enjoy working with kids as well as adults.

My tutoring approach can vary depending on the student’s needs, personality and learning style. However, my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves. This gets done by using real-world examples (and material they already know) to establish a connection between what they're already familiar with and what they are trying to learn. I use examples that effectively engage the student and I pay close attention to how efficiently the material is being absorbed. I also switch roles between tutor and student by asking questions in order to check for understanding and to ensure that material is being learned. Additionally, I also work right alongside with my students. If we’re doing a Chapter 5 test review in Algebra, for example, I will work the same problems in the same order and compare answers at the end of every problem. By doing this, there will be a stronger connection during the tutoring session and I’ll be able to explain a concept more effectively or clarify why a problem is done in a certain way.

Retention with respect to learning is built upon repetition and participating in examples, and not with just hearing a lecture on a certain subject. While the latter is important, it’s best used when supported with strong examples. When doing this, students are ensured that they actually know what they’re being taught, rather than just “think” they know and forget when it comes time to take the test.

My goal as a tutor is to create a sense of deep understanding and confidence within my students which they can then use on homework, exam questions and possibly life in general. This confidence that gets developed can then be used to engage in new and unfamiliar problems, both in and out of the classroom.

I’ve tutored elementary and high school students for five years and college students for five years as well. I’ve tutored as a private tutor for four years and have also tutored for the SAT test for a year.

In my opinion, there are some aspects to tutoring that make it indispensable in helping students achieve their potential. In essence, personal tutoring is the foundation for deep understanding and true mastery of a subject. I consider tutoring to be one of my biggest passions. I believe in the importance of education and see it as the key to a better future. And I am a firm believer in the power of mentoring and take tremendous pride in watching my students succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Extremely knowledgeable!

My son is becoming more confident in his Chemistry and Pre-Algebra classes because of the tutoring sessions he has had with Joe. I absolutely love his approach of having my son explain the problems and their solutions; thereby confirming his understanding of the material. My son definitely seems more engaged. Thanks Joe!
