I began tutoring in math and science as a sophomore in college and instantly fell in love with the experience. I began tutoring in math and science as a sophomore in college and instantly fell in love with the experience. During this time, I've tutored over 60 students in the Stockton and Sacramento area, ranging from as young as 4 years old to as old as 55 years of age. I can truly say that I enjoy working with kids as well as adults.

My tutoring approach can vary depending on the student’s needs, personality and learning style. However, my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves. This gets done by using real-world examples (and material they already know) to establish a connection between what they're already familiar with and what they are trying to learn. I use examples that effectively engage the student and I pay close attention to how efficiently the material is being absorbed. I also switch roles between tutor and student by asking questions in order to check for understanding and to ensure that material is being learned. Additionally, I also work right alongside with my students. If we’re doing a Chapter 5 test review in Algebra, for example, I will work the same problems in the same order and compare answers at the end of every problem. By doing this, there will be a stronger connection during the tutoring session and I’ll be able to explain a concept more effectively or clarify why a problem is done in a certain way.

Retention with respect to learning is built upon repetition and participating in examples, and not with just hearing a lecture on a certain subject. While the latter is important, it’s best used when supported with strong examples. When doing this, students are ensured that they actually know what they’re being taught, rather than just “think” they know and forget when it comes time to take the test.

My goal as a tutor is to create a sense of deep understanding and confidence within my students which they can then use on homework, exam questions and possibly life in general. This confidence that gets developed can then be used to engage in new and unfamiliar problems, both in and out of the classroom.

I’ve tutored elementary and high school students for five years and college students for five years as well. I’ve tutored as a private tutor for four years and have also tutored for the SAT test for a year.

In my opinion, there are some aspects to tutoring that make it indispensable in helping students achieve their potential. In essence, personal tutoring is the foundation for deep understanding and true mastery of a subject. I consider tutoring to be one of my biggest passions. I believe in the importance of education and see it as the key to a better future. And I am a firm believer in the power of mentoring and take tremendous pride in watching my students succeed.

great tutor

He encourages me to talk through the problem and when I come across something that needs further explanation he takes his time to explain what went wrong. He also lets me talk it out the I figure out the issue. He is one of the best tutors I have worked with.

Excellent Tutor

Joe not only helped our son with proofs, but actually explained the applicability of them. He is patient and was really focused on "understanding" versus memorization.

Wonderful tutor!

Joe helped me with Advanced Algebra class. He helped me understand concepts by breaking it down and made sure I understood what he was teaching. Thank you Joe!

Patient, thorough, and flexible

Joe is an excellent tutor. He is patient and very thorough. He actually teaches and wants our son to understand the material. Our son has had several tutors over the years. He hasn't felt like they have helped him. Joe is different. After his first session, he said Joe really helped him. He's great. He actually wants Joe to continue tutoring him over the summer in preparation for his Calculus class starting in the fall.

Extremely knowledgeable!

My son is becoming more confident in his Chemistry and Pre-Algebra classes because of the tutoring sessions he has had with Joe. I absolutely love his approach of having my son explain the problems and their solutions; thereby confirming his understanding of the material. My son definitely seems more engaged. Thanks Joe!

Easy to work with and patient.

My daughter was having a hard time in geometry and Joe helped her so much. We will continue to use him till this course is over.

Patient and adaptable

My son was not looking forward to having a tutor. At the end of the session he was glad he did the season and was feeling more comfortable with the material. My son really enjoyed that he was able to go through the material at his own pace and Joe explained in ways he could understand.

Scores going up!

Our son's Algebra II grades are steadily climbing, along with his confidence -- precisely what we were looking for. Thanks, Joe! Excellent tutoring!

Competent and patient

I’m a forty-something student who has returned to school to finish my bachelor’s degree after taking a break to be a mom nearly 20 years ago. It was a difficult decision to contact WyzAnt because I felt self-conscious and embarrassed for not understanding the concepts that were being covered in my math class. But Joe immediately made me feel comfortable and was able to quickly determine what my issues were. He worked side-by-side with me through the chapter problems and gave me the tools I needed to find solutions. Joe even came up with a formula for an interest rate problem when the book didn’t provide one. This helped me comprehend the word problems I was working on, giving me a better understanding of how to solve for a specific variable. Joe is a competent and patient tutor, and I look forward to working with him in the future, not only in this class but also in chemistry.

Joe helped my 8th grader improve his math grade after only a few sessions.

Joe has been working with my son for a few months and his math grade has gone from a C to an A-. Joe has been successful explaining difficult concepts in a way that was tailored to my son. Something his middle school teacher was not able to do. Joe is always on time and very professional. I can't recommend him high enough.
