Hi, my name's Johnny.
I have a Bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of California, Irvine, I'm 1 class shy of a Bachelor's degree in computer science from Oregon State University, I have a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults from Cambridge Assessment English, part of the University of Cambridge, and I've completed bootcamps in iOS app development and software engineering through General Assembly. I have over 10 years of class room and 1-on-1 experience teaching high schoolers SAT I, SAT II, AP prep courses in chemistry and physics, all maths from algebra to calculus, and statistics for college credit (in partnership with Oklahoma University). I lived in Vietnam for a year and taught middle school courses in critical thinking, writing, debate, and social studies there. I'm currently a data strategy advisor at a Fortune 500 company and taught a non-technical co-worker SQL, SAS automation using VBScript, and other programming skills.
I know everyone learns differently, so my approach is tailored to each individual student. In general, my teaching/tutoring style is dialectical; it's an interactive "hands-on" experience. I engage in dialogue with my students, stimulate their reasoning, probe them for understanding, and collaborate with them. I use simple language, draw lots of pictures, walk them step-by-step, side-by-side, and, ultimately, make sure that they learn the concepts, not just the steps. The steps they'll forget; a concept, learned, they'll remember. They'll also be able to derive the steps from the concept, on recall.
I teach/tutor because it's in my blood, and I'm proud to say that I've helped many of my students ace tests, get into the best colleges in the world, and, in the case of my co-worker, advance in his career.
