I am a patient person who likes to get results. You will benefit from my writing and analytical skills that I have acquired during a long career in government and the private sector. Specifically, I have been a manager with significant editing and proofreading skills. My career has been varied, having worked in management consulting, legislative analysis and city government administration. In city government, I honed my writing and editing skills through my tenure with the City of LA, where I wrote/edited reports to the Mayor and City Council in the City Administrative Office and the Dept. of Cultural Affairs. I retired from a director-level position at LAX, where I had I have a high level of trust and responsibility.

My approach to tutoring is to simplify tasks through clarity and directness. I place a great emphasis on phonics as it relates to speech and presentations. I believe it is currently underutilized but pays off in many ways. Further, my approach is Socratic, as I place a premium on the dialog with the student, as well to encourage an exchange through questions and answers. One of the most important tools I bring to this arena is a finely developed sense of professional and fact-based(minimizing hyperbole and conjecture)writing that recognizes the value of logical flow, where one thought leads clearly to another. Another strength I offer is the economy with which I use words, which is a treasured commodity. Finally, I will demonstrate an appreciation for humor while learning, which has proven benefits when deftly applied!

I possess a Master's degree in Public Administration with a specialization in Intergovernmental Management from the University of Southern California, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from San Francisco State University and have a solid educational foundation through my initial 12 years of private schooling.

Criminal Justice

For two years as a Management Consultant for the San Francisco Bay Area firm, I conducted management audits of public safety organizations. Such audits focused on the staffing, organization and effectiveness of police and sheriff's departments in California. In addition, I reported on criminal justice issues for public sector clients as a legislative analyst in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento for 6 years. My BA in Political Science and Master's degree in Public Administration provided the foundation to succeed in the social science arena, including criminal justice.

Corporate Training

Grammar,

Grammar

I currently tutor a Wyzant student in grammar. We use a method whereby he reads aloud and I follow along on my copy of study material and we discuss different grammar matters. My approach is to impart guidance on the rules of grammar and just as important, the exceptions to the rules. Previously, I tutored a Master's student in grammar regarding the presentation of her thesis. In general, I will attempt to simplify the process of understanding grammar so that it is accessible and understandable to the student.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My experience in proofreading has been gained through my 15 years as a director for the City of Los Angeles in multiple depts. My expertise is in administration and budgetary support documents, but due to my attention to detail, I have been frequently called upon to proofread documents outside of my subject area mastery, such as public relations-related material. I possess a Master's degree in Public Administration from the U. of So. Cal. and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from San Francisco State U.

Reading,

Reading

I have a lifelong love affair with reading and I am happy to share that with others. I read at least two hours every day and my mind is wide open to various forms of literature. I believe reading is enhanced by discussion with others and hence, the popularity of book clubs. One of the things I think will keep students interested in reading is finding intersections with their lives. This is something I can facilitate as I have a knack for making these connections. Isn't it interesting how one can read something one day and the next day find a compelling connection with something that relates to what you just read? I possess a Master's degree in Public Administration from the U. of So. CA and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from San Francisco State U. These degrees provided me with the analytical tools I needed to succeed for a career in government and consulting, including a mentoring role for numerous staff whom I have managed.
Spelling,

Spelling

Learning how to spell is a function of understanding phonics (sounding out words) and reading. My mastery of spelling comes about by virtue of paying close attention to these two functions. Yes, memorization is involved with learning how to spell. In addition, a good tutor imparts how to employ phonics and reading to make sense of English spelling. We will get comfortable with the many exceptions to spelling rules. It will be frustrating at first, but then patterns will begin to emerge. We will be further challenged by new usages that come about through email/texting and other modern communication modes. I know this sounds crazy, but spelling can actually be fun! Anxiety Free Session Period!

I believe most of my reading issues stem from fear and anxiety when reading aloud and fluently. Ray was very encouraging and asking many questions to try to better target the areas we will need to work on. He assured me that not only does he work for the student but is also on our team. I learned some much from my first, I can’t wait for my next. 10/10 would recommend!
