Dear Prospective Student,

I have been fortunate to combine my love of teaching with my innate love of writing. After receiving my Bachelor's Degree in French and English in Secondary Education at Auburn University (Phi Beta Kappa), I taught English Composition, French I-IV, and European History for three years before I gave birth to my daughter. Once she began school, I taught poetry-writing in elementary and middle schools in Alabama as a poet certified by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Following this refreshing and delightful time of teaching children the meaning and importance of the imagination and the creative, Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, hired me as "Head of the Creative Writing Magnet Program." In addition to the two-hour block of Creative Writing, I also taught Advanced English 11, Regular English 9, Technical Writing (as part of the Technical Writing Magnet Program), and Literary Magazine. During my time at Lee, I took summer courses at the University of Alabama, Huntsville; and in 1994, received my Masters in English Literature, with an emphasis on the Romantics and Irish writers (4.0 average). Shortly afterwards, I began teaching night classes at Calhoun State University. At Calhoun, I taught all levels of English - 98 and 99 (remedial grammar and writing); 101 and 102 (writing and literature); and Part I and Part II of English Literature. In 2003, 2005, and 2008, I taught graduate poetry-writing as a honorary Ph.D. at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. Starting in 2004, I directed the Limestone Dust Poetry Festival, a one-of-a-kind celebration of poetry and poets in the Southeast. From the time I left the Festival in 2011, I have continued my writing career, and also my teaching career, through poetry readings/workshops/lectures and through private tutoring and mentoring for college students and for poets, of all ages, just beginning their writing journeys.

My writing career, as both a poet and columnist, has fulfilled my need

ACT English

ACT English

I taught SAT prep when I was a high school teacher in the 1990's. Since June of 2017, I have tutored six students in ACT Prep. Of the six students, all raised their previous scores. Because I taught high school English 9 and Advanced English 11, over an eleven-year period, I am quite familiar with the proper use of language and how to read and comprehend the written word. I have also been a professional poet and editor since 1979.
English

English

At Auburn University, I minored in English, but I was only a few hours short of a double major. I graduated from Auburn in 1971 in the top 5 percent of my class, and was certified to teach English, French, and European History on the high school level.
French

French

I majored in French at Auburn University, where I graduated in top 5 percent of my class. Following graduation, I was certified to teach both French and English on the high school level. (I was only a few hours short of a double major in French and English.)
Grammar

Grammar

I have taught grammar on the high school and college levels, at both the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and Calhoun State University. I especially taught grammar in the remedial writing classes at Calhoun State University.
Literature

Literature

I studied both English and French literature at Auburn University, where I received a B.S. degree in Secondary Education, with French and English as my certified classroom subjects. I also received a Masters in English Literature (including the Irish Romantics) from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, 1994. On the high school level, I have taught Advanced 11 English Literature. On the college level, I taught English Literature, Parts I and II at Calhoun State University. At the University of Alabama in Huntsville, I taught poetry as a part of classes in graduate poetry-writing. As a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, in 1993, I studied French literature under the auspices of Brown University, "The Paris of Flaubert, Balzac, and Baudelaire." All seminars were conducted in French; all literature was in French.
Writing

Writing

I received my Bachelors Degree in French and English, Secondary Education, at Auburn University, Phi Beta Kappa, 1971. In 1994, I received my Masters in English Literature (with an emphasis on the Romantics and Irish writers), 4.0 grade average. My qualifications also include certification by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts as a poet-in-the-schools. In addition to my Bachelors and Masters degrees, I have done post-graduate studies at Vanderbilt University and the University of Dijon, Dijon, France. As an National Endowment for the Humanties Fellow, I studied 19th-century French writers, for a summer in Paris. As a Fulbright Scholar, in 1999, I studied the arts (specifically the works of the poet Rumi) in Turkey. My writing has won awards, among them an Individual Fellowship in Literature from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Humanities, and an Alabama Book of the Year Award for my first collection of poetry, To Hide in the Light. In 1994, I won "Best Graduate Student Essay" in the University of Alabama, Huntsville, English Department. I am widely published in individual literary magazines and journals associated with colleges and universities. My work appears in more than 14 anthologies on the state, national, and international level. Elk River Review published two of my collections of poetry, and Pudding House in Ohio published a chapbook, Bonnie Roberts: Greatest Hits, in an archiving of American poets. Additional teaching experience includes teaching American poets in Dublin as part of a Fellowship in Verse from Poetry Ireland, 1992.

Excellent English/Grammar/Reading ACT Tutor

I would definitely rate Bonnie with 5 stars without hesitation. She is one of the best, if not the best tutors my son has ever had. Bonnie is very knowledgeable in her subject area and has the innate ability to deliver that knowledge to her student in a way in which they comprehend it and apply it. Also, my son actually enjoyed working with Bonnie and did not complain about being made to go to his tutoring lessons. She is always pleasant, positive, and strives to build self-confidence in her student.

Nice tutor!

I heard that you and my wife talked about difference between America and South Korea on culture. She said that she really enjoyed it because she is interested in American culture to get used to it for rasing a baby. I also learned American culture through Zoey after this class. She is excited to have another discussion next time. I believed that it would be helpful for her to improve English and understand on American culture. Thank you. Joel.

Kind and friendly teacher as alsways

My wife suffered from breathing last time so she suggested to have this class in cafe where she could feel cool and confortable. Bonnie agreed with this suggestion. Thank you so much, Bonnie. It really helps her to breath. She was able to study for 2 hrs without problem. I saw she doing homework. I think it is very efficient to learn how to construct sentence with correct verb form and each word position. If she had a chance to use that sentence she made through roll play in class with you, I am pretty much sure she would remember easily and learn very fast! Regarding cafe's atmosphere, she doesn's care about it. If you think it's too loud, feel free to let her know any time! Thank you :)

Best English Tutor!

Bonnie is the best English tutor I've had. I was feeling very overwhelmed by having to write a large number of essays for my college applications, but Bonnie's editing expertise made the process so much easier. She is very knowledgeable and managed to make my essays much more eloquent, grammatical and well put together. She also went out of her way to give me additional suggestions of examples in order to strengthen my papers. Thank you Bonnie!
