Currently, I am serving as a tutor to Hazel Green Alabama and the area. I am also a stay-at-home mother looking to help students succeed. Prior to moving to Hazel Green, Alabama I taught first grade for two years at Seisen International School in Tokyo, Japan. I also taught first grade for three years at Chimoborazo Elementary School, a lower socio-economic inner-city school in Richmond, VA. All students are unique; I want my students to become knowledgeable, respectful, and caring citizens and for them to be excited about their education and to look forward to coming to school. I so enjoy seeing the light in their eyes as they grow and develop a life-long love for learning. I consider myself successful as a teacher when my students are successful.I have always tried to challenge my students to develop strength of mind and character and to learn to think for themselves. I feel students learn best when learning is student-centered. It is important that students develop a clear understanding of new facts and ideas. Students should be able to express what they have learned in their own words, not just memorize answers. Inspiring a student to become a life-long learner and creative critical thinker means guiding them in learning how to learn with self confidence, not just helping them prepare for a test. Also noteworthy, I feel that my deaf education minor has helped immensely in my teaching. It offers me another way to interact with my students and for them to interact with their classmates. Using sign language in the classroom also helps with classroom management. As a successful form of non-verbal communication and an excellent teaching tool, American Sign Language is something special I bring to the classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have obtained my Bachelor's of the Arts Degree in Elementary Education K-6th from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. I also have a minor in Deaf Education. I have taught for 5 years, 3 in Richmond, Virginia inner-city Chimborazo Elementary School, 2 in Tokyo, Japan Seisen International School.

I have experience teaching in elementary schools for five years and homeschool my own children. I have taught advanced math to children as well.
Homeschool,

I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and a minor in Deaf Education from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD. As part of my program of study at Augustana, I also pursued a concentration in music and played oboe for four years in the Augustana College Band and Orchestra. On occasion, I have brought my oboe into the classroom for teaching purposes. Currently, I am serving as a part-time tutor for elementary school students all over Plano, Richardson, Allen, and McKinney. I am also a stay-at-home mother homeschooling my 2 children. Prior to moving to Plano, TX, I taught first grade for two years at Seisen International School in Tokyo, Japan. I also taught first grade for three years at Chimoborazo Elementary School, a lower socio-economic inner-city school in Richmond, VA. All students are unique; all present challenges in one form or another – even the best behaved. I have found my behavioral management system to be successful in both kinds of classrooms. Having taught students of diverse levels in the same class, I work with students individually and in small groups according to their academic needs.
Phonics,

Phonics

Having taught first grade for 5 years, I have either taught students how to read or increased their knowledge. I have worked with struggling readers individually as well as in small groups to get them on grade level and even above grade level. I also worked with advanced readers to push them to be more knowledgeable and read at frustrating levels. As a homeschooling mother, I have also taught my own son to read, and he reads on a 1st/2nd grade level for a Pre-Kindergartener.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

As a teacher I have helped many students become better at study skills. For example, a student in first grade was always hyper and tired and was not doing her work well or organized in her study skills. So, I communicated with the parents and discovered that the child was going to bed at 10pm or later every night. We sat down and made a plan for her after-school schedule that included scheduling in time for work, play, dinner, sleep schedule and all the necessary rules to go along with it. This took the child a month or so to get with the schedule, but she was more alert, active, and able to do her homework and was more successful in school. When I was a teacher, I have worked with my class as a whole with study skills in the classroom and with individual students to make their lives easier. For example, each student had a job in my classroom and it needed to be done by the end of the day. These jobs helped my students understand their importance in the classroom and the importance of scheduling their lives to help others. I have many ideas on how to improve a students study skills such as schedule, planners, setting time limits for work and play, making positive incentive charts, etc. My son who is 5 and is homeschooling with me has a chore chart and understands his chores need to be done as well as school and daily activities. It is necessary to learn study skills for school so as to not have to cram the night before for a test. I can help with planning daily study ideas and dividing up the studying to make it an easy goal for a successful test. Time scheduling, concentration, listening and note taking - these are just a few of the skills I can help students be successful in their study skills. I also have my personal knowledge and life-experience to share to lead to successful study skills.
