About Sandi

Bio

My background in education spans just over a decade. Throughout my tenure, I've held multiple administrative roles within both the K-12 and higher education settings. I hold an M.Ed. in School Counseling, am a Nationally Certified Counselor, and currently work as a school counselor and own a college counseling business. My counseling background allows me to see each student as a unique individual, giving me the ability to mold my techniques into what would work best for each student.

When working with students, I like to use various multi-sensory methods. I find that each student learns in a different way and the multi-sensory approach allows me to find the way in which each student best learns. When working with younger children on letter recognition, sound recognition, and reading, I like to use shaving cream, play-doh, and other techniques that they can see, feel, smell, and touch. Not only do the children have fun learning this way but I find that they quickly pick up the concepts.

I realize the importance of working with students within a quiet, distraction-free environment. In my experience, I have found that students seem less distracted when working outside of their home environment. For that reason, I offer tutoring in my office. If you are unable or would rather me travel to you, I am open to that as well. I have worked with students in my office, their homes, and even at the public library. Whatever works best for each individual student!

My love of teaching comes from my own love of learning. As a lifelong learner, I am a committed to guiding each student with whom I work towards a greater love of learning. Not only do I want to see each student succeed academically, I love to watch as they learn more about themselves and gain confidence along the way!

ADHD

ADHD

I believe that I am qualified to tutor students with ADHD because I have extensive experience working with students diagnosed with with ADHD inattentive type, ADHD hyperactive type, and ADHD mixed type. During my school counseling internship, I completed a comprehensive case study on my experience in working with a middle school student who was struggling with school due to ADHD. During that time, I worked with the student to find successful methods for classwork, homework, and test completion. We also worked on study habits, test-taking skills, as well as social skills. At the conclusion of our time together, I wrote a complete case study that was chosen as one of the pieces to be submitted for the college's accreditation process.
Career Development

Career Development

I believe that I am qualified to work with students on career development because I have taught many career development lessons to elementary, middle, and high school students. In addition to teaching career development lessons, I am certified to administer the Strong Interest Inventory as well as the Myers Briggs Inventory. These inventories help guide high school students toward their chosen career paths. Outside of my qualifications, I feel passionate about helping to guide students toward the career that would be the best fit for them.
College Counseling

College Counseling

As an independent college counselor, I work with high school students on a daily basis, helping them to find their best fit college. Like my tutoring philosophy, my college counseling philosophy consists of a process-focused, client-centered approach. My goal is to meet each student where they currently are and guide them throughout the collegiate application, admission, and decision-making process. Ultimately, my goal is to guide students toward self-discovery, build confidence in their final college choice decision, and for each student to continue down a path to collegiate, personal, and professional success.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Hello! I am an elementary school counselor. I have worked with elementary aged students for several years and have three children of my own that range from elementary aged to high school. In addition to helping students within the school setting with reading (ELA), math, science, health, organization, and study skills, I've also guided and helped my own children prepare to be successful in their own studies. I have experience with Common Core.
Handwriting

Handwriting

As an elementary school counselor, there have been many opportunities to help students improve their handwriting. I've worked with students on their print and their cursive. While we live in an age of technology driven writing, I still believe in the importance of being able to produce legible handwritten responses.
Phonics

Phonics

In working with children to teach phonemic awareness, I believe in using a multi-sensory approach. It is important that children are able to hear, see, and feel the sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them. Without a solid phonemic background, reading and writing will be very difficult for a child. Some examples of the multi-sensory approach that I use to teach phonemic awareness are shaving cream, glue, physical movement, and sound bingo.
Study Skills

Study Skills

As a school counselor, I teach study skills lessons to K-5 students. As a college counselor, I teach study skills to my 11th and 12th grade clients. Whether working with elementary aged students or high school aged students, the concepts are the same. Organization, time management, knowing what type of learner you are, and having an appropriate space and time to study each day are all key to successful study habits.
