A Few Tutor Qualifications
I've played piano and vocal-coached in many Broadway shows as well as many regional and national theaters where I have been musical director. I'm an experienced Broadway veteran vocal coach and pianist.
I already incorporate study skills into all of my tutoring activities. The most common problem with the average failing student is a lack of study skills, fuzzy focus and disorganized goals. I supply every student with a blank calendar and teach them to use it as well as require that they have a binder to keep it in along with a small notebook to make detailed notes about assignments. I believe it is important to make school an integral part of a student's whole life and to bring the knowledge the student obtains daily into the study experience. I also discuss test-taking, how tests are designed and how this knowledge will help them succeed, particularly when taking standardized tests. The final aspect of study skills that is already a part of my tutoring is teaching body language as it pertains to teachers and how paying attention to not only what their teacher says but how (s)he says it and his/her body language will help make school easier and more enjoyable.
My ACT score is 32 with Math being my best subject. Half of doing well on the ACT is knowing how to take tests so I work on test taking strategy in addition to subject practice. With my help and hard work you will increase your ACT score!
I have recently returned from completing a Fulbright research grant in Morocco where I became fluent in the local dialect of Arabic, Darija. In addition, I have a foundation of 3 years of university Modern Standard Arabic. I have knowledge of diverse resources available through applications and online to help Arabic learners complement their classes and progress more rapidly outside the classroom.
I have taught history for more than 30 years, and it has been my love since childhood. I have a B.A. degree in history from S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo, with American history as my specialty.

Before this time, I taught American history for two years to the high school children of our military in Germany and for six years to Puerto Rican students in the Buffalo Public Schools. I also taught American history for six years to eleventh and twelfth grade gifted students within an award-winning program that I ran through Niagara-Orleans B.O.C.E.S.
In my leisure time, I play sports and read lots of history, most recently David McCullough's "Truman" and Edmund Morris' "Theodore Rex" about Teddy Roosevelt at the height of his power as president.
My first job, before teaching was as a copy editor and feature writer for the Niagara Gazette in Niagara Falls, N.Y. I interviewed famed trail lawyer F. Lee Bailey, Sen. James Buckley [R-NY], and Capt. Ernest Medina, the man involved in the My Lai Massacre during the Vietnam War. I also wrote historical pieces on the "Stolen Election of 1876," the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and about the Niagara area on Dec. 7, 1941, the day that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.
Thus, I have always had a fascination with the history of our nation, have taught American history for many years and have written about some of its more interesting facets.
I hope, therefore, to tutor American history to your son or daughter. As a teacher and tutor, I bring many years of experience, a great love for American history, and a strong desire for learning success.
I taught English during my 30 years as a Sp. Ed. teacher with Jr. high and high school students. Most of them were labeled LD/BD. They required the use of many different materials and methods to help them understand the rules and usage of English language. Much of their instruction was individualized or in small groups. Each student needed to develop their own approach to comprehending how to remember the rules of English. Often it required using a written list to remind them of what steps to follow to help them, which way to approach how to use English rules correctly.
I am certified as a teacher in the state of NC, have my Naional Board Certification and my add-on license in Academically Gifted (K-12). I have taught for many years and have taught many workshops on reading strategies and ways to understand and interact with the different types of text. I have experience leading a group of recreational basketball players through skill development & knowledge of the game. I'm working on some basketball enhancement cert. I may take students to programs that include human functionality, training zone and structured exercises with certified trainer cert.
I earned a TESOL Master's to teach ESL in 2010 from Cal State L.A.
I have taught physcial science, physics, and chemistry for many years, Currently, I teach physical science at a middle school in Chandler. My classes are filled with demonstrations and lab activities. Rather than lecture, I like to either show the students the physical concepts we are learning about or have the students discover the concepts for themselves. Consequently, I have a considerable amount of portable lab equipment that is easily transportable to any location. In the case where I cannot transport the equipment, I have numerous videos of the lab demonstrations.
