Education is the key that unlocks the door to success; I am passionate about helping learners unlock that door.

I have been a classroom educator for over 15 years. I prepared for my teaching journey at University of Tennessee Knoxville by majoring in English and minoring in Child Development. I continued my studies at Christian Brothers University where I obtained a Master's degree in education and teaching license. After several years in the classroom, I felt it necessary to pursue a Reading Specialist degree from Harding University to better serve struggling readers. Although I love the work I do in the classroom, I find that working one-on-one with learners is my true calling. I enjoy tutoring learners individually because they are more apt to grasps concepts that they did not understand during whole group instruction. The learners I tutor show great progress after receiving more individualized instruction.

I am an outstanding English tutor because I focus on the phonics foundational skills that struggling readers are lacking. I teach phonics in order to teach learners how to read and build their fluency. I then transition into teaching learners how to read to learn by focusing on vocabulary and comprehension skills. Additionally, I am an outstanding English tutor because I teach writing through reading. This is not only helpful when students are asked to perform on standardized assessments, but it is also a way for them to showcase their understanding of common themes presented in literary texts. I am an outstanding math tutor because I focus on the number and operations foundational skills that learners need to solve complex problems. I also teach students different mathematical strategies that can be used to solve problems. Knowing and using different strategies is very helpful especially when students complete performance tasks on standardized assessments.

I am more than qualified to support your learning goals, and I look forward to helping you unlock the door to your success through education!

Grammar

Grammar

As an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher in the world of Common Core State Standards (CCSS), I am tasked with helping students learn to think more critically about and analyze what they are reading. Because this is such a large undertaking, not much time is devoted to the continuous teaching and learning of grammar skills within the CCSS. However, I know the importance of being able to use parts of speech properly, identify and use homophones correctly, and write complete sentences. These and other grammar skills are ones that I put forth an effort to incorporate into my instruction as an ELA teacher. In the quest to improve reading within our schools, communities, and country at large, we still have to focus on basic grammar skills.
