I am TESOL certified from the University of California where I taught ESOL to students from all over the world. Some of the classes I taught:
accent reduction, phonics, grammar, reading, writing, study skills, idioms, English slang, listening/speaking skills, vocabulary building,
workplace English, business English, conversation and culture, basic living skills
I have an interactive teaching style, whereas I don't just lecture and say, "do this." I work with my student(s)with a "hands on" approach.
I am also a certified Reading Specialist from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Some of the classes I taught:
finding the main idea, topic sentence, major/minor details, fact/opinion, reading comprehension, paraphrasing, conclusion, summary, paragraph, expository/narrative writing, literature, poetry, study skills, speed reading, inference
I've been teaching students from 12 to 65 for over 8 years. I have patience and a flair for teaching that makes my students want to learn. I will be more than happy to provide references. |

GED

General Education classes are a group of classes the fall under a portion of the reading category, with which I am highly certified to teach. I conduct a lot of group work and kinesthetic activities. I have the students keep daily journals, do a final group presentation, current event debates, read alouds.

grammar
|
I would like to be able to
tutor in both grammar and proofreading. I have taught
grammar classes for over "8" years from beginning to
advanced levels in the ESOL program. I've taught
everything from nouns and verb tenses to gerunds and
prepositional phrases.
In the reading classes I taught, proofreading was a
major part of my job. I had to proofread my students
paragraphs, expository, and narrative papers for
spelling and grammatical errors.

phonics
|
I use phonis when I work with beginning, intermediate, and some advanced ESOL students for accent reduction and pronunciation. It is one of our more popular classes. The class entails sounding out the letters of the alphabet one by one and then blending them with another letter or vowel...each time adding more letters and vowels...noticing how the words are changing and how our mouths are moving. Typically, I have the students bring a large hand held mirror to class so that they can see the movement of their moth and the placement of their tongue when they make these new words. I also tape record them. We also play some fun phonics games.

study skills

These are rules of thumb that can enhance a students learning potential, although much of it is common sense.
Go into a quiet room or a library to study with no distractions (no TV/computer , stereo, ipod, pets, cell phone)
.Focus on only the task at hand.
.Organize everything you will need in order
.Highlight important parts, dates, names, etc.
.Don't take the time to look up every vocabulary word up in the dictionry that you don't know
.Keep a notebook by your side where you can jot down ideas
